Beth Stewart | 644 comments P 104: "A badge pinned to his lapel informs me that his name is "Duds" which seems less of a name and more an admission of chronic fault"

I love it! This book should get a star just for that description!!!!

Beth Stewart | 644 comments The back cover of this book advertises "a twisty thriller", and "oozing with suspense".

No. I think this book falls short of any of those descriptors.

As a book about events in kids' lives it's an OK, easy read. As a mystery it falls flat.

It's hard to identify with the main character who has a penchant for collecting things, including weird things, leaving the reader with the impression that he is creepy. Most of the book focuses on his boring life rather than on the murder and since he is the narrator, the friends are lacklustre and the [murder] story falls boringly flat .

I am glad I borrowed this one from the library rather than making a purchase!!!!

message 3: by Mary (last edited Apr 06, 2018 07:33AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mary C | 172 comments Oh NO! I am only about 20% of the way through AND I *bought* the book (my library doesn't even have it on order). Well, I'll keep on. I actually am enjoying it thus far. Will let you know if I agree with you at the end.

Beth Stewart | 644 comments 😂 now remember Mary ... we all like/dislike different books for various reasons, so don't let my review taint your interest in the story.

Mary C | 172 comments I won't....and you gave it 2 stars, so it can't be the WORST book you've read.

Beth Stewart | 644 comments lol! True, mary I did give it two because we don't have half stars
And I did finish it. Had it been one star, likely I would have abandoned it. Life is too short to read books that are just not enjoyable

This one was just boring. And as a mystery ..... It fell flat as a Finnish pancake.

Erunyauve | 167 comments I've just started it, and I'm liking it so far. The reviews are pretty mixed - some readers adored it, and others were bored to tears. There are a lot of comparisons to Stephen King's 'The Body', which I did like, and so far, I can see the similarity. If King does one thing better than anyone else, it's kids. I'm just a bit older than the boy in the story, so era-wise, I can appreciate the culture of the time. (I'm guessing the 'Metal Mickey' nickname would fly over the heads of many readers.)

Well, I have to admit to being one reader where "Metal Mickey" flew over my head so I had to go look it up after your comment. Showing my age...
