ooh that sounds interesting... I like that it's before/during/after bc then you get an even bigger picture of what was going on in GWW. Tho I'm always a lil bit cautious of other people writing with someone else's characters, but if I end up reading it, I'll let you know what I think :)

I can't quite remember if the proposal is by the lake, actually I'm not sure if they show the proposal at all...weird I can't remember but I probably tried to erase it from my memory because it never should've happened at all.
Oh. I think you wouldn't like to hear that I love this scene in the book, but from all I know it's not in it.
The movie is actually more "traditional" than I hoped. You're right, it's rather close to the others movies.
And it's quite odd that just the moment when Amy is absolutely in grief, Laurie kisses her.
In the book, Laurie returns to Amy to comfort her, and they spend some time together, until the mourning time is over, and on the lake, Laurie asks Amy, whether they want to be in one boat forever, hinting the marriage, and Amy says yes.
Honestly, I really dislike Amy in the first part, but although Jo is my favorite character, I completely accept Laurie and Amy as well as Jo and Bhaer.
And for me, Amy is also partly Skye. You all don't see this, but it's my interpretation.

What a horribly terrible no good heart-breaking book! At first I felt rather indifferent to the whole pairing of Laurie and Amy and Jo and Prof Bhaer, but then when it actually happened it was absolutely revolting! Why is Amy partly Skye?
So you did read Little Women Part 1 and 2? Well, Skye is blond and associated with color blue.
She is ambitious, calculating and neat, and don't like drama.
Of course, she is also like Jo, but I think all Penderwicks are a mixture from Little Women as well other classics and Birdsall herself.
Mostly, I split reading the parts. There is enough Jo and Laurie fanficton. I wrote Beth's diary, by the way.

Yes I did indeed. I feel as if I've just read a strange bizarro world where everybody was brainwashed. Blah.
Um, what was the problem? Of you have read an unabridged edition, it's possible that there are a lot of boring references to The Pilgrim Progress. I think a smooth adapted edition could work a bit better. I personally think that LW is basically good, but it's sometimes awkward (Alcott was involved in Transcendentalism).
The Pilgrim's Progress references was not the problem. The strange bizzarro world was that everyone (except Meg) ended up with the wrong person and they were happy about it! HAPPY! I liked that she kept Christianity at the heart of the story. I also liked the that they all strove to be good and not complain, although sometimes it got a bit boring hearing about it all the time.
Also it also made me sad that Jo never got to go to college :(
Ok. Yes, Christianity is a nice part of the novel and it's a pity that movies cut it. (I struggled a bit with the references to Bunyan because I didn't know the Pilgrim Progress before).
But I told you that you should only read Part 1 - (everyone =Jo and Laurie,)

Yes I haven't read Pilgrim's Progress but now I feel like I have because of all her references, haha! And yes I thought about stopping at part 1, with Jo sitting in the chair and Laurie next to her and everyone smiling....but I just couldn't stop there. I had to read part two to see if I would find it as horrible as the movies. In truth, I actually like Professor Bhaer he was quite an interesting character to read about, just not with Jo :(

Yeah I agree, Mr Bhaer wasn't bad as a character - it's when he takes the spot Laurie should have filled, that's where I draw the line. He was fine himself, just not with Jo.
One thing I don't like about the new movie is that they normalize a 40-yo getting married to someone literally half his age. Just seems a bit gross to me, and I don't like that it tries to make their relationship CUTE. Yuck, barf, gross, please no.
Another thing I don't like is that they try to promote Laurie and Amy, but if they're going to stick to the book, I guess they have to make the best of it. I just don't understand how you could like Amy and Laurie, talk about no chemistry. It's just like Dusek and Skye - their relationship is so random and abrupt, like where did THAT idea come from. I just don't understand what's behind authors deciding "let's make a romance plot twist that people wouldn't ever do in real life it'll be a huge hit"

Well, perhapy there's not much chemistry between Laurie and Amy, but we see certainly see more than between Skye and Dusek. The whole marriage thing is of course just a slap for the shippers. Not for a hit, but just to say: Shut down, shippers, it's done.
Skye is really forced and we never get to see Dusek. I can't imagine that this plot twist was planned in the beginning.
Well, there's a trope that the tomboy eventually ends up with the first young man wanting her to marry, as soon the girl changes to a young lady (just to mention the "Trotzkopf". or Emily of New Moon.
Birdsall imitates Alcott, of course. But Dusek is a very bad comparison to Bhaer. Bhaer might be older, but we know him at last. Just inventing a stranger to marry such a beloved character off, is weak.
The sudden double wedding is from Jo's Boys. But there's the second couple side characters.
By the way, Gerwig has a twist in the movie: It's also possible that the marriage with Bhaer and the umbrella scene are just fiction. And the movie is pretty clear that Jo has deep feelings for her boy Laurie.
Again for Laurie and Amy: I personally think there's chemistry. Perhaps it's not the relationship you want to have. I think it feels like love. But perhaps I have different expectations....

Yes I did see that the umbrella scene and her running after Bhaer in the movie they made seem like a fantasy and just something she put in her book because the publisher wanted her to be married. Yeah most definitely seemed like Birdsall didn't plan out this last book very well. At every opportunity she avoided conflict either by just conveniently putting it in the background and not actually having the reader be a part of it or marrying Skye off to some rando. Like you said, very weak writing!
haha I was honestly thinking of the Laurie/Amy relationship in the book, I haven't seen the movie so I can't judge how it handles the ship - in the book it seemed a little bit forced and very random, like she suddenly got uncomfortable with how similar it was to her own life, and needed a quick switch or something. I haven't read it in a while so I'd have to go back and reread to really think about why I dislike it so much. But it's probably mostly due to the fact that I really liked Jo and Laurie as characters and had no patience for anyone else in the book so then ofc I want my favorites to be a couple 😂
"shut up shippers, it's done" is exactly how I felt, that's so true Verena.
"I can't imagine that this plot twist was planned in the beginning", me neither for sure. It's so hard to imagine her planning this before she began. We know she knew how many books she wanted to write - she probably knew where she wanted to take it. I wonder what made her change her mind, if that's what happened.
"Dusek is a very bad comparison to Bhaer. Bhaer might be older, but we know him at last. Just inventing a stranger to marry such a beloved character off, is weak." very very true. That's a good way of putting it. It definitely gives off a vibe of Birdsall either getting tired of the series and just wanting to quickly end it, or of her wanting to focus the book on someone else, so she has to get Skye out of the focus. Which is odd, because everyone liked when Skye was brought into the story - it's a sad day when she stops being included in the narrative.

Perhaps this is the reason. Birdsall wanted Batty for Jeffrey and it would be an emotional distraction. In the other hand, I'm sure Birdsall needed Skye for her "spectacular return" because of some story parallels (Emily of New Moon, Little Women, Jo's Boys). It's a pity I will regard the Penderwicks only as literature mix.
I will never see them any more again like before.
Though, I like Lydia's book and I'm currently reading a Jack-Lydia-fanfic on Wattpad (I'm aware it would be nothing for you, and even this is for you the wrong shipping story Line, Jack/Lydia is it Wörth for me).
This is perhaps the odd thing. I know I much I was disappointed, but I treasure the good things. Sometimes I accept to have different shipping outcomes.
As long as everyone is alive, I'm thankful (and there are so many series ending with a "goodbye" for a character).
I'm quite sure that Birdsall's last bool is more a comment on literature, making fun of some tropes...

Nooooooo, not by J. S. Cooper, but the actual title is Rhett Butler's people (Rhett is the title of the German version - sorry) and it's by Donald Mc Caig (link above).
I just see it has also very negative reviews, but as you know, I mostly judge a book simply by its happy ending and sometimes skip/forget the drama between (:
