The Dry
question
Big plot holes

I tried this after reading so many raves about it, particularly, as her new one has just come out. I found it readable and quite enjoyed some of the twists. HOWEVER.. (spoiler alerts) there were at least two massive plot holes that ruined it for me. Scott must have been covered in blood and guts from staging Luke's suicide, let alone dirt and sweat from biking back to school. Secondly, at the end, it talks about staying to find stones to put in Ellie's pockets and Grant finding the note with Falk written on it and suggesting putting it in Ellie's room.. this would have been in the water so completely wet. Annoying - this is the sort of thing a decent editor should pick up on.

Scott had put on a plastic rain poncho and new gloves before he shot Luke.
Ellie went to the tree to retrieve her backpack -in the aftermath Gretchen only thought Ellie must have been collecting the stones.
Explained on the 2nd last page: The stones to weigh her down were collected by Mal and Grant and the note from the pocket was still dry because only Ellie's shoulder and hair dipped into the water.
Re Phone number without a name: I would if I wanted to call the following day and knew the person it belonged to to be a childhood friend and had known him before through tales told. The keyword "grant" was there, so no need to write the name, too.

Agree here. Also, much as I enjoyed the book, my major stumbling block came with the explanation of the note from Karen found in her library book; who, writing down the contact details of someone they don't know, writes down their telephone number but not their name?
I agree with your first observation about Scott, but not about Ellie. Her head was in the water but her lower half was not. The narrative indicates that she lay on her back and looked at Mal, who then held her head under the water. The note in her pocket would have remained dry.
And for the record I only thought that this novel was average, not worthy of all the five star reviews.
