After all the excitement of Canada Reads, I just can't quite move on. Is anyone interested in joining me in a challenge to read all the Canada Reads winners? I will add a Canada Reads Winners Completion thread also but we can have discussion here.

Likely everyone has read some portion so this may be easier for some than others depending on past reading.

1. In the Skin of the Lion
2. Next Episode
3. The Last Crossing
4. Rockbound
5. A Complicated Kindness
6. Lullabies for Little Criminals
7. King Leary
8. The Book of Negroes
9. Nikolski
10. The Best Laid Plans
11. Something Fierce
12. February
13. The Orenda
14. Ru
15. The Illegal
16. Fifteen Dogs
17. Forgiveness

Yeah Natasha! I think we will likely find some cross-over between the challenges and BINGO. I seem to have some catch up in the earlier years.

Louise | 1171 comments Good idea. There are 5 I haven't read (see below) but I have the books sitting on my shelves. I will read Next Episode and Nikolski in French though.

2. Next Episode
3. The Last Crossing
4. Rockbound
7. King Leary
9. Nikolski

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1633 comments I only have 8 unread, which I think is pretty good considering I've only gotten into Canadian literature these last few years.

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisafriel) | 201 comments I have only read three on the list, but most of the others on my TBR. I am going to read the five from this year's shortlist first, but I do plan at plugging away at these as well.

Ann-Marie | 158 comments Funny because just this week I went and searched up the top 5 annually and the winners and charted them all geekily in my reading journal to keep track . I've read 10 of the winners.

message 14: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 406 comments I have been wanting to do exactly this, these are the ones I still need to read.

1. In the Skin of the Lion
2. Next Episode
3. The Last Crossing
4. Rockbound
7. King Leary
9. Nikolski
10. The Best Laid Plans

message 15: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1171 comments Interesting that ALL of us who have posted our plans have NOT read these 4 books:

Next Episode
The Last Crossing
Rockbound
King Leary

message 16: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 158 comments Good observation @louise! I tried to read Rockbound in the past and got maybe 30 pages in and snapped it shut. It's a tough, old world style book. Would have been interesting to understand the debates that year (it beat out Atwood!).

I haven't read:
1. In the Skin of the Lion
2. Next Episode
7. King Leary
9. Nikolski
10. The Best Laid Plans
11. Something Fierce

of interest, if you're further curious here's where I found the shortlist of each year too (didn't find it on the CR site)

message 18: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Penney | 538 comments I have to read:

In the Skin of the Lion
Next Episode
The Last Crossing
Rockbound
A Complicated Kindness
King Leary
Nikolski
Something Fierce
February (Half done)
The Orenda
Fifteen Dogs

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1633 comments I have what may be a stupid question. Is King Leary based on King Lear? A quick Google isn’t proving helpful. That’s one Shakespeare play I know nothing about. I’m thinking of reading King Leary soon, but I’m wondering if I should read the play first (and an internet summary of course!)?

message 20: by Ann-Marie (new)

Ann-Marie | 158 comments I think it's actually a hockey themed book?

Yes, it's about an old hockey star, but I was wondering why it's called King Leary if it's not alluding to King Lear. No biggie. I'll read a synopsis of the play before I start the book, just to be sure. I do have a complete works of Shakespeare kicking around somewhere.... I just might dig it out!

If anyone wants just a little more celebration of Canada Reads. Here is the streaming of the After Canada Reads presentation at the FOLD. Kim, Loretta and I were very happy to be in the audience at the FOLD festival in Brampton.
