I choose to read the book Fire from the rock by Sharon M. Draper. The main topic of this book was a young girl trying to decide if she wanted to go to a intergrated school or not. Sylvia Faye the main character was chosen to go to Cebtral high. cCentral high was an all white school that was shortly becoming intergrated. Throughout the story Sylvia wrote in her hour about her journeys and her outlook on what she thought about things. Sylvia was a very smart, independent girl, but she was also still just a regular teenager. The main focus was to get Sylvia to decide wether she was going to central or not. In the book it shows what all Sylvia and her family goes through dealing with white people and how they are treated. Sylvia did have one white friends which was a Jew, and in the story we see how Jews also get treated. In the end of the story Sylvia decides not to go to Central high, she returns back to her school when summer is up.
Being that I’m black reading this book i did have many connections with the story and the characters. I think i more so have a connection with Sylvia because she was more optimistic in the story. Yes, she really didn’t understand whites but she gave them chances and didn’t judge them all, rather than her brother Garry. Garry was more on the violent side when it came to white people he did not like them and wanted nothing to do with them. He joined many protest groups and fought for what he believed in. This book does remind me of today’s society because still today blacks and whites are not able to see eye to eye, it’s not as bad, but race is still an issue that needs to be solved.
I absolutely love this book. I do recommend you read this. The author used mainly main vs. man conflict in the story and that was one thing i liked. I liked this because man vs. man conflict makes the story exciting, and gives it more an entergitic feel. I also liked how the author did not sugar coat anything between the black and white people. It was times in the story where i felt like i was actually in the story with them. In the resolution I didn’t like how the author turned Sylvia, this brave strong female into a weak person at the end when she decided not to go to central high. I felt like In the story the author lead us to believe Sylvia was going to choose to go the central but in the end she didn’t.
