This novel was published in the 1980s. A man lives alone in an old apartment building in New York City. All around him, buildings are being demolished for urban renewal. Every night when he comes home, another neighbor has moved out until he is completely alone. Then the book reveals a sinister ending. Thanks for the help. I need the title.

I don't quite remember. Something like he's reliving the life of a ghost that haunts the building.
