Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions. Hope you will enjoy your time with us here.
Hello! I just stumbled across this group and decided to try it out. I love the concept and everything seems so well organized. I'm a writer and researcher so I do a lot of reading and thinking critically about texts. I always love being able to discuss books. :)

And even more gratified that you thought we looked well organized right now because the end of year is our most frenetic time, and I'm always concerned new members will find it confusing. I am an admin here so don't hesitate to reach out if you need any help with anything! Our members are super nice and helpful too.
Welcome!!!
Welcome, Heather! Jump right in and have fun with us! We just announced the two major challenges for 2020, and you're just in time to join in if you would like, but there is no obligation.
Welcome Heather! You’ll love it here - such great people and an amazing variety of books. It’s extremely well organised, thanks to our amazing admins, but also very flexible about how people want to play which is an ideal combo.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I'll check out the 2020 challenges and I look forward to reading with you all. :)

Welcome Heather! What a great time to join us with all of the plans for the 2020 reading challenges. Have fun!
Welcome, Celia. You might want to start by reading a Thriller this month. Also check out our Activities folder. We have a Bingo by year going and a team challenge which represents the election call Poll Ballot. It is not to late for either .
In the Footnotes folder we have a trim the tbr challenge going and you could participate in that as well.
Or you can just look around and jump in where you feel comfortable.
Welcome Celia. We look forward to getting to know you and sharing books and lives together. We’re a fun and lively and engaging crowd.
Hi Celia! Welcome! As the members have mentioned, the start of the year is a busy time for us here on PBT and it may seem overwhelming! Feel free to ask questions on any of the threads—our knowledgeable and helpful members often answer questions before an admin can see it!—or feel free to drop me (or any of the admins) a PM. I look forward to reading your reviews!
Woo hoo! I'm back! It's been a few years since I actively participated in PBT---right around the time it moved from Shelfari to Goodreads, I started a new job and went back to school for my MLIS. Grad school pretty much sucked away all my leisure reading time---occasionally I could sneak in a book for a class or between semesters, but for the most part, my reading over the last 4 years or so has been occupied by textbooks and research papers. It was worth the work--I've graduated the program as of Dec 2019 and will receive my diploma in May. And now I can read for fun again, so I'm coming back to PBT! Hello to old friends, and hiya to new! I've posted a review already and now I just need to learn the ropes for this new forum.
It is great to see you, again!! Congrats on the graduate degree!!! I am glad you’ll have time for some fun, leisure reading again.

Welcome back, Jen. Congrats on all the changes in your life - - they sounds wonderful.
I'm also glad you mentioned you were returning, because we have another Jen, and I don't want to mess up all the participation points, lol. Now I will know to be careful.

Jen wrote: "Oooh good catch; can I help with this in some way? Should I sign my posts "OJ" (old Jen) or something to help with tracking?."LOL! That's hilarious!!!
Someone gave some instructions a day or two ago for a former shelfarian (Barbara M) to add the M into the screen name that posts.
Maybe she or whoever mentioned how to do that could let Jen know how to add that M back into her name, as well (Jen, if you're amenable to that?)
LibraryCin wrote: "Yay! Congrats on your MLIS and welcome back, Jen! (Jen M from shelfari days)..."Sorry for remembering all our shelfarians by their old shelfari names!!! LOL!
Some of your might remember that when we shelved the books over there, we also used to tag them with the user's name, in addition to the tag.
Having done that for years, I remember shelfarian screen names quite well! (Now, having said that, just watch a bunch of former shelfarians come let me know that I didn't remember them... so sorry if that's the case!)

No! I like OJ best!
I joined just after the switch to Goodreads. So we never crossed paths I think. But nobody better call me old - lol! I could tell again looking at Cindy’s tag lists. Welcome back, old new friend!
Lol, Jen, you are so kind. So long as I know I can hover my mouse over the name and that shows me which Jen. It just really helps to know ahead that I need to be careful!

Welcome back, Jen (aka Jen M, OJ)! And congrats on the MLIS. A friend recently finished her degree as well. I know it was a commitment.
What do we do if we aren't sure about a book's genre? I'm reading Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs and it is a mystery, I find it very suspencful but that's just my opinion. Would it count for this months this prompt?

Would it coun..."For the monthly tags, it only matters if YOU think it fits the tag. No one needs to ever have tagged it that way. So if the mystery you are reading fits your definition of suspenseful, then it fits the monthly tag. Personally I consider as suspense any book that keeps me up reading to find out what happens, or accellerates my heartrate just from reading. And there are those generally accepted as suspense books that produce yawns from me.
Malorie wrote: "What do we do if we aren't sure about a book's genre? I'm reading Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs and it is a mystery, I find it very suspencful but that's just my opinion. Would it count for this month..."The Monthly Tag is pretty flexible-If you think it is Suspense, than it is Suspense. The hard fast rules of Tags only applies to the Challenges. It does not have to be tagged that on Goodreads for Monthly Tags-K Reich, to me and obviously to you is suspense-so
go for it
Malorie wrote: "What do we do if we aren't sure about a book's genre? I'm reading Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs and it is a mystery, I find it very suspencful but that's just my opinion. Would it count for this month..."Welcome, Malorie! I see some conflicting points above so, as an admin, I wanted to jump in and clarify on your question.
For our monthly tag, which for June is suspense, so long as you think the book is suspense then that works for us! It can be tagged suspense, you can find it on some kind of website that recommends suspense books, or you just think it is suspense after reading the blurb or the book.
Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs seems like an excellent fit!
Now, this rule changes slightly if we are playing a large game or doing a large challenge. You may have noticed Poll Ballot Tally, for example. For these challenges, if you read a book that fits the tag, for example, constitution, then the book must have that exact tag. This is the way that we keep large challenges as fair as possible. When we do that, we fully recognize that some tags may not fit what the book is actually about, but it is the best we can do.
I hope that answers your question! Please feel free to ask if something else is unclear. PBT has several things going on at once and it can be overwhelming if you are jumping into the middle of it all, but it sounds like you are starting with the heart of what PBT is all about--reading a book that fits the monthly tag!
Happy reading!
Welcome Malorie! This is a wonderful group and I hope you will have as much fun as I have had over the past decade.
Thank you all for clarifying! I was confusing the yearly challenges with the monthly reading. Sorry if I misled you, Malorie and welcome!
I was in the group for over a year until I realized that we can review more than one book for the monthly tag. I'm explaining this, as it was not obvious to me.Welcome Malorie! This is an interesting group with diverse interests in reading and lively opinions. I hope you'll enjoy PBT.
Thank you so much everyone! I love challenging myself in general but especially in my reading. I'm probably crazy for doing 4 challenges at once between two groups but it makes me have to think and strategize what I read next that can satisfy most of the challenges. My great Aunt and Uncle read several books a week a piece so they would stay sharp. They were still reading up until their deaths at 90 years old and they were as sharp as a 20 year old. I loved them and hope to be like them as I age.
Alright I've been here for a while but I have a question. Cqn I post reviews for the previous tags? I mean those a few months ago
Hi Rose, Great question!
No, you should not post reviews for books that fit past tags in those older folders. We “close them out” in a sense at the end of each month, and, once we do, we do not go back and give participation points for any new reviews nor do we add them to the group bookshelf.
Instead, any books you read that do not fit the current month’s tag—even if they fit older tags—can be reviewed in this month’s Other Books folder. We do not shelve those books, but you will get one participation point per review!
I am on my phone but let me know if you need help finding the correct Other Books folder and I will provide a link when I am on my computer!
Let me know if that makes sense!
Nicole
