I think Anthony Hopkins would play a great grumpy OVE. He has that quiet and mysterious character, and he is Welsh so if he plays the role in English there would be enough of an accent to drive the character to the next level. My other thought is who would play the oriental lady that befriends him and annoys him in the same breath?

My only problem is that any time I see him I automatically think of Hannibal Lecter. It was the same with the suggestion of Fred Gwynne. I would see Herman Munster.

Not only is that a pretty dated term but Parvaneh is Iranian. I would describe her as Middle Eastern, not Asian, but maybe that's just me?
All that aside, I could picture Parminder Nagra in that role. She played Neela on E/R and was in the movie 'Bend it Like Beckham'.

Loretta wrote: "All while reading the book, I pictured Geoffrey Rush as my Ove! Now I can't picture anyone else!"Another good choice. Not sure why but I often get Billy Bob Thornton and Rush confused. I think it is because they both played a disabled character. Rush in Shine. Thornton in Slingblade.
Sujay wrote: "Robert De Niro or Tom Hanks"Hanks is playing Ove and De Niro would have been excellent.
Ove is one of those premier characters actors will want to play.
Sean Bean could play Ove. Bean's got the right amount of grump and grit to be true to the character. Added bonus: he's accustom to playing tough characters. IMO Tom Hanks is too much of a nice guy to portray someone so crotchety.
I like any character Nighy plays. He is like Dean Stanton where he is the king of quirky characters. I would love to see his interpretation of Ove.
I love Tom Hanks, but I feel like he is too young for the part. I really did like some of the other suggestions such as Dustin Hoffman or Christophe Waltz. "How about someone Swedish? Or someone who doesn't have the star power that screams their name so you can't get past the reality of who the star is?" Colleen said. I think that Richard Jenkins (The Visitor, The Shape of Water". He is a very underrated actor who is not a super star. Or, even British actor Bill Nighy. This guy can play anything!
Jacqueline Crawford wrote: "Bill Nighy would be great, or Michael Palin?"Yes. Either one of them. I saw the original Swedish film version of the book and thought that the actor did a wonderful job.
Eileen wrote: "Clancy Brown gets my vote"I like him too. He's been around for a long time, but a lot of people have no idea who he is.
Bill Murray, that's who I pictured as I was reading the book. NOT Tom Hanks, the baby face and high pitch voice is all wrong.
Tom Banks bought the rights to make an American version of the movie. There is already a Swedish movie based on the book. I read that Tom Banks plans on playing Ove. I'm certain he'd be quite good. Jean Reno would be good, except that he has a heavy french accent. Harrison Ford might have been a good choice. Tom Banks will be Ove, though.

The subtitles were short enough & slow enough that it wasn't a distraction to my husband, who, when I saw that it had subtitles he would hate it, but he loved the movie - he saw something of himself in Ove!
Rolf Laasgard played him to perfection in the Swedish version so it will be interesting to see what Tom Hanks does with the role.
Mary wrote: "Rolf Laasgard played him to perfection in the Swedish version so it will be interesting to see what Tom Hanks does with the role."yes. He was very good in the original film version. I hope that the Hollywood version tries to stay true to the character.
Anoop wrote: "There is already a movie out there..and the guy did amazing!!"Yes, he was good, but Hollywood is making a movie starring Tom Hanks.
JK Simmons narrated the audio book - I could totally see him in this character - he is the psychiatrist "Scoda" in Law and Order SVU and he does the "We are Farmer's" commercials.
DB wrote: "What about Bryan Cranston? He seems to totally inhabit whatever character he is playing."no
Colleen Chi-Girl wrote: "Becca wrote: "There is a movie out already on amazon prime and the actor who played him did really well."I agree!!"
It was great even with subtitles!
