Book read back in 2003 about a man building barns for the Cajun mob in Louisiana mostly for their horses that race at Louisiana downs. He meets a women and has a son but when the kid turns 8 or 9 he goes missing into thin air and no one remembers him except for the father, his wife and friends tell him he never had a son. He goes looking for him and finds a man that has a similar story with his kid going missing and then the man he met gets taken by the government. So he gets an urge to go to Colorado which is actually an alien telepathically telling him where his son is, the last 30 or so pages were torn out and it was about 130 pages in.
