Hugo & Nebula Awards: Spreadsheets and more!

I looked at your Read list, John, and it is quite impressive, especially in older classics. We have a lot of Read in common but I'm jealous that I didn't read as many of those when I was younger. I guess I was off reading other stuff. I've caught up a lot in the last two years and am up to a count of 185.

Did a compare on our read list and we do have a lot in common. When younger, read mainly from Hugo lists and Sci Fi book club. This group has me wanting to pick that back up.

Discovered Robert A. Heinlein in my teens and was hooked forever. Collected all of his over the years and still have the physical books. My TBR has a lot of more might-be-read as freebies from Amazon and elsewhere. Some of what I call mind candy when I need a break. Like to have some breadth and depth on my kindle when traveling.

Still focusing on SciFi and Fantasy and Goodreads groups have inflated my TBR. Now think that is a good thing.

Ditto for me, Heinlein was one of my entry points in my teens (graduated high school in '75). I never read the juveniles though! Asimov, Clarke, Burroughs, RE Howard, Herbert all early stuff for me. I've always leaned towards award-winners but really ramped it up when I joined this group two years ago.

I did read most to the juveniles b/c when I was in 7th grade all the girls started reading stupid girl books and I didn't want to. So I read what the boys were reading. I ran through the (incomplete) set the library had, and then I got the books from the adult section. I read stranger in a strange land then, and didn't really get some of the stuff that was going on. Of course, kids were more sheltered then. Or at least, I was.

Boy! If my mom had only known!

Heh, re: Heinlein and adult themes - I've read I Will Fear No Evil maybe about the same age or slightly older

I wasn't sheltered, especially not when it came to books. My dad, a Freudian psychologist, was a voracious reader and had all kinds of books around the house: best-sellers, history, pulps, texts and things like the Hite Report (60's sex study). I had access to all of it and if I didn't read it completely, I at least browsed it. That included my dad's collection of Playboy magazine, to which he was a subscriber from the beginning (when he died in 1979, I inherited his subscription). My parents knew full well I was reading it and ignored it. I did learn to appreciate more than the pictures though.

Allen, I love the access to books you had. My dad didn't read much, now that I think about it, I suppose he got too much reading as an attorney. My mom read the women's best sellers of the day, some of which were really good, actually. For example, her Arthurian legend books should be great even for those in this group. https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Yes, my mom too, Valley of the Dolls and such, but my dad was very fast and went through volume. I'm grateful to them that I had that access but resentful over his killing himself that I never got to talk to him about books, especially as an adult. Fortunately the access created the curiosity to keep exploring.

Both my parents read a lot, but mainly mainstream literary fiction and classics. We had like just about 10 SF books in home library when I started actively reading. I wasn't neither forbidden nor encouraged to read adult literature, so I may get a book or two and DNF them, slowly going thru the library. This, among other things meant that I've read both unabridged version of Tales from 1,001 Nights and Fairy-tales of different nations (anthropologist editions, not children adaptations) if we are talking about not age-appropriate readings

Try as I might, I was unable to resist looking through the sheet... I suspect there's a few on there I have read and don't recall, but going off the top of my head I've read 104/579 books on the list... very interesting indeed!

Why resist? It is not painful to look at and 104 is an impressive number! Keep going! Note that not only total 'read' list, but also breakdown by decade is available, which for me showed a large gap in 80s novels

I have plenty on the to-read list, don't worry... and those are only the ones I noted because I don't want to forget about them.

I was kinda surprised I had read so many without having ever gone out of my way to read anything 'award winning'... makes me feel like they do a good job on giving out the awards!

It's a chicken and egg problem, I guess. It is known among authors that Hugo nomination and winning definitely boosts sales (I've tried to find calculations behind that but alas...) so it is possible that you've heard about a book because it was nominated

That reminds me, I haven’t put an update out in a while. I don’t think I ever put the 2020 adds version out there, and now I’ve read some of them. Luis, there are a handful of us spreadsheet nerds in the group that live to see things play out in statistics.

I updated the spreadsheet for myself when 2020 noms were announced.

The problem with creating a "master list" is that we each have read different books from the list, so we have to only copy/paste into our own file, rather than copying the whole thing.

I just added a 2020 update of the spreadsheet to the shared folder, for any newcomers to find. There is an excel version and a google sheets (cloud) version :)

I added a new feature on the Summary page. It'll give you a random book every time you open the sheet (or click the checkbox). It can also give you a random book you haven't read yet, or a random book you could re-read.

For anyone using older versions of the sheet, you can just copy the whole 'Summary' page and paste it over yours. You won't lose any stats.

Also, I was thinking about adding some stats for your book collections. What would be interesting to you? It can use anything from the 'Owned' column in the bookdata page.

P.S. It's always so hard for me to fill out stuff like this because I completely forget all about most books I read after around 10 years or so. So even though I'm sure I've read most of the old classics, my memory of them is a complete blank, so I can't really count them as "read".

In terms of the mountain of unread books: I'll think I'll work my way slowly backwards, starting with the newest.

Well, my best estimate is that I am at around 15%. 80 something read out of the 580 listed? However, I have no idea how to make the spreadsheet work for me, I just counted up my read X's manually.

Tom--What I do to make the spreadsheet count is, instead of x next to the book I have read, I put a "1" Then it can count.

I know there's away to make it count x's or checks, but I forgot. And I'm not using Excel, I'm using open office, so not sure if it is the same.

Tom, I don't know what you mean by Xs. In the spreadsheet, you have to use the drop-down menu in column C to select a rating or choose "Read (no rating)" in order for the system to count it.

And before I joined this group I was only reading the winners of the Hugo awards. Not surprisingly, I am 46% through the winners of both awards.
And I am about 14% through the whole spreadsheet. I like the group read aspects of this group, but I think I need to get back on track and finish off the rest of the winners when not on a group read.

Which version of the spreadsheet are you using?

Bryan's original spreadsheet from the first post hasn't been updated recently, but this version is updated up to the 2020 winners the latest 2021 nominees:

(it's linked in the group google drive in the first post, if you want to find it again).

You should just be able to add new rows at the bottom of your sheet, then copy+paste the 2020-2021 entries from the Bookdata sheet into your own existing sheet, so you don't have to re-enter everything.

If you want to update the summary page in your sheet, you can Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V over your own summary page and it shouldn't break anything *fingers crossed*

If you're using the google drive version (not excel), you can always revert to an old version of the file if something goes awry as it's all backed up in the cloud.

I've got my version updated for 2021 nominees. I'll post it a little later today. Already dropped in the Nebulas and left room to add the Hugos. I think that my main page is in sync with Sarah's otherwise, but use with care. Mine has a page that lists all the Hugo & Nebula winners, along with Locus SF and a few other awards, plus "best-of" lists.

I just noticed in the 2021 update spreadsheet that Sarah linked, the author names for 2020/21 are listed [first name][last name] where all previous years are [last name],[first name]. I'd update it myself but I'm set to "comment only" so maybe someone with access can correct it, whenever there's time.

My version is all last/first because I pull them over to another sheet where I keep sorts by title, author & pages. Makes it easy to look up the year, pages or books by one author quickly. You should be able to copy-paste the titles and authors from mine to the master.
