Ilarion saw a Rose Weasley, a girl from a lower year....3rd. From what he'd heard, she was trouble. He went in the opposite direction of where she was heading.

It was night, and Rose was determined to enjoy her last day of freedom before she was escorted to and from every class, meal, and daily detention. "Hey!" she called to the nearest passerby, which, it so happened, was Ilarion "Lark" Cantrell.

Lark groaned quietly and turned. "Hi" he said.

"How are you?" Rose asked cheerily.

"How was your day?" she added. "It's almost curfew."

"Fine. How are you?"

"So very dead," Rose groaned. "At least I'll have my cousin to keep me company from beyond the grave."

Lark laughed and smiled for the first time. Maybe she wasn't so bad after all......

Rose smiled in return before moaning again, "I am so dead."

"Yea I know that feeling."

"Not to this extent," Rose corrected. "Detention every day for the rest of the year, escorted between classes and meals, not allowed to leave the common room for any reason other than detention, class, or meal. And you don't have Hermione Weasley for a mum."

Lark smiled. He knew all about Mrs.Weasley.

"I think I'll be a ghost," Rose said dramatically. "Or I'll go join Peeves and be an poultergeist!"

Lark laughed. "Yeah, I bet you know all about how to do that."

"Yep," Rose agreed. "At least I wouldn't have to worry about getting a new wand because the grindylows broke mine. I had to go to Diagon Alley to get a new one!"

"I haven't broken any wands, ever......except when I was a 1st year."

Rose burst out laughing.

Lark blushed a little. "But, hey, how'd yours get broken then?"

"Grindylow stole it while Al and I were swimming in the Black Lake. It broke when they took it," Rose explained.

"Yeah, I guess mine is funnier"

"Mine might be funny if I mentioned that I skipped detention to go get a new wand from Diagon Alley," Rose said.

Lark laughed. "You're right!"

"That was yesterday night," Rose replied. She pulled out her new wand. "Exactly the same as my old one. Hopefully mum never finds out."

"Eh. Considering what I've heard about her she probably will." Lark said

"Yeah," Rose groaned. "She will. I'm pretty sure the only reason I avoided a howler was that I skipped breakfast."

Lark laughed again. "You skipped that too?! You must skip stuff a lot."

"Skipped every class today, as a matter of fact." Rose wasn't even joking.

Lark's stomach rumbled. "Are you hungry? I am."

"Ravenous," Rose agreed with a shrug. "The candy in my room is certainly not a proper meal. To the kitchens then?"
