That particular kind of 'speciality foods' aisle, hasn't been adopted in the branches of supermarkets that do exist in my very rural part of Cymru, alas; at least not yet anyway.

I sometimes read posts on other threads, from others, mentioning how one can now visit a doctor, in some supermarkets, then go the pharmacy section to collect ones meds....buy all kinds of domestic appliances, home ware good, DIY materials, tools, paints etc, garden equipment, buy cars & a house even, and whatever else one can buy in one of these 'hyper' stores, that I can only wonder about. Alas, here, in my little sparsely populated, very rural, quiet corner of Wales, us residents of Pembrokeshire, have to be content to shop in something called a 'Convenience Store'....probably cos the only additional 'extra' they have in them (but only in my local branch of Tesco - my local branches of Asda & Sainbury don't even have a cafe')...are customer toilets! And Tesco is the only store that does home delivery too....that's about as sophisticated as my local shops are 'over here'!

Nevermind, thanks awfully for the advice Suzy...I shall see if can find it cosying up next to the Bovril pots instead! :)

Val H. | 22141 comments Our tipsters' ladder looks like this (first number is number of games correct, second number is the cumulated margins):

Blastro - 2 (59)
Tech - 2 (83)
Anita - 1 (103)
Grizzly - 1 (103)
Lez - 1 (113)
Suzy - 1 (113)
SussexWelsh - 1 (124)
Sj Brooke (Steve) - 1 (134)
David E. - 0 (129)
the Duke - 0 (130)
Val - 0 (135)
Foe - 0 (140)
Philip - 0 (145)
Deano - 0 (154)

I regret to say that I was a bit premature last night when I awarded the $15 pot to Lez and her charity. I was still in Friday night margin mindset. In fact, the weekly winner is Blastro and he wins the $15 for Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation. Sorry Lez! Well done Blastro!

WoW?!! - it sounds like the back end of the Third World out there, Duke?!! ;o>

I guess fussy and fancy Foodies all live elsewhere? I've been to places in the middle of seemingly nowhere in rural Norfolk where Bread and Newspapers might often be in short supply (and always available first and foremost to the local residents before any visitors to the area) in their tiny Village Shop/Post Office/Off License/Pub - but nevertheless they almost always had some of the most extraordinary Grocery Items on their limited Shelf display ... tinned Oysters and Snails, Coconut Milk, Quinoa and Spelt, Avocado Dips ... when all that I wanted was just a tin of Beans! ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Have you heard anything from 'the loved-up honeymooners' recently, Val? ;o>

Is the Weather still behaving where they are now? It's suddenly turned very cool and damp and shivery here over the last couple of days and suddenly getting much more Autumny by the day now.

Val H. | 22141 comments Thanks to Facebook Messenger we are able to keep in regular (private) contact. They should be in Innerleithen now and have an afternoon's mountain biking planned before they check in to Traquair House. I had made a Spotify playlist for them entitled "Channelling Your Inner Braveheart" and they sent me a video of themselves tootling up the A7 singing "Scotland The Brave" (Glen Daly version). I've had hundreds of photos and they seem to be having a wonderful time. R had a bucket-list moment when they visited the Lakeland Motor Museum and he got to sit in the driver's seat of one of the world's two 2000 TVR Cerbera Speed 12 cars. Yes, I'm the same as you, the what???? but R has been car mad since childhood and he really knows his stuff. The weather has been mostly kind and Scotland isn't looking too bad this week. They have already scouted an Edinburgh pub (Belushi's?) for the Grand Final at 5.30am!

Not sure of their exact dates but the weather for Innerleithen is:

Mon 24/9 Sunny 12°
Tues Part cloud 13°
Wed Cloudy, wind 16°
Thur Cloudy, showers 13°
Fri Part Cloud 11°

So, not bad at all. Hope they have a great time! If they use the M8, they’ll pass within a mile of my house!

Ohhh, I am SO pleased for them! The Weather sounds like it has been pretty much just perfect for them throughout - and hopefully the UK has lived up to (and exceeded) all of their previous hopes and expectations of coming here ;o>

message 1465: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments I thought you'd be near the M9? From Innerleithen they head up to Loch Lomond on Monday but I don't know which route they are planning to take. I strongly advised them to stop off in Falkirk to see The Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel. I don't know if that is in their itinerary but they may do that en route from Loch Lomond to Edinburgh.

I’m near both, Val, but the M8 is Edinburgh - Glasgow and the sliproad leads off from Polmont Main St. The M9 is Edinburgh - Dunblane and goes north-west from Junction 2 of the M8.
I wouldn’t bother with the Kelpies, they overlook the motorway, and I’m not sure it’s worth the detour just to see the canal basin and visitor centre. I’m biased though, I find them creepy and repulsive and a complete waste of money.
The Falkirk Wheel is superb, really impressive. I’ve been three times but not actually done the boat ride as it’s always been too busy and/or full of kids. There’s a really good café too.

Suzy, I know what you mean. We used to rent a cottage on North Uist (Western Isles) every year and there was a small general store about 3 miles away. They had some quite exotic food - quails’ eggs etc. as well as local meat, specially lamb, but if the ferry was delayed they could run out of milk and fresh food. There’s a small airport and a deep sea firing range on Benbecula, served by a NAAFI which is almost a supermarket and the only place on the islands you can get a Sunday newspaper.

Val H. | 22141 comments But you were the best of the six of us that scored zero, David! Glad to hear you enjoyed Istanbul. I've heard great things about holidaying in Turkey.

We did have another "event" this week when the Brownlow Medal count was held ("fairest and best player"). The winner, as expected, was Tom Mitchell from Hawthorn so $15.00 goes into the pool for re-distribution when I do the final divvy-up. Runner-up was the Pies' Steele Sidebottom - how cool a name is that? Almost as good as my favourite Jaeger O'Meara. Sidebottom's nickname is Rusty.

Thanks, Val. Yes, Istanbul was fascinating, a marvellous city with lots to see and do. And very cheap at the moment. A meal out was about half the cost of here in the UK.

As for the punting, it's the taking part that matters

theDuke | 6491 comments Weren't the olde worlde days just downright sexist, eh?! Thank goodness that sort of thing doesn't happen today...oooor…..does it?

Odd to hear some folks hark on about the good old days..and yet, there was a lot things that weren't that great...racism, sexism, child cruelty (especially those sadist school teachers, nevermind the blerdy nuns!), inequality, polluting industry, war damage, rationing, crap cars, especially 1970s cars, most of them were shite, no internet, no colour TV & only 2 or 3 channels then, no mobile phones, no welfare or NHS, free GP's etc. (before 1947),.....I could go on!

Granted, there's plenty wrong with modern life too...but still...things are better today, ain't they?

Never mind colour TV, hardly anyone had a TV at all till the Coronation in 1953. Most people rented them as they did radios. We didn’t have one till 1956 when I started work. Same with phones, very few people could afford one.

Yeh, Mum has said her father only got a TV for the coronation, rented of course!

Mind you, I guess kids back then actually did go outside to play, in those days...try getting a today's kids off their electronic gizmos! I imagine, child obesity, wasn't a 'thing' back then!

I'm often amazed by TV shows set anywhere from the 30s to the 50s and 60s which show ordinary folk with a phone in the hall. In the early 70s, I knew one person with a home phone in Edinburgh. I'd write a letter to my Mum in Rhodesia and organise a time - about a month ahead - for me to go round to Jean's to receive her call.

Yeh, one does see re runs of shows from that era, with characters needing to find a telephone kiosk to make a call! I guess todays programme makers are too young to really know what life was like back then.

I know we had a phone in our house, for as long as can remember..but my dad was a civil servant, and he liked his mod cons! Granted this was in the late '70's then.

I say...your family has travelled far and wide, hasn't it! :)

Anyhoo, last throw of the die....and I think the Eagles have long awaited their return to glory! 12 years since they last held the title...so, here's my final punt:

Val H. | 22141 comments Has Blastro tipped? Can't see his anywhere.

Well, despite a late flurry of support for the Weagles, I'm sticking with the Woodsmen. It's amazing how many people here in Melbourne (supporters of other teams, that is) say "I could never barrack for Collingwood!" For many people they are the team you love to hate. But I will always support the Victorian teams against the inter-staters.

I am curiously bereft of interest in today's game. Weird, 'cos last year I was right behind Richmond and in 2016 everyone got on the Bulldogs' bandwagon. I do like the Pies' style of play and they have some out-and-out stars (Steele Sidebottom, Jordan De Goey, Brodie Grundy, Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar, Jeremy Howe, Travis Varcoe (whose sister Maggie died a few weeks back after a collision of heads in a women's footy game) and not to mention the American Pie - Texan Mason Cox, all 7' of him, recruited from playing basketball at Oklahoma State), but if they lose, I won't be devastated. The Friday before the Grand Final is a public holiday in Victoria especially for that event. Maybe if I had been in the city yesterday for the parade I would have got caught up in the excitement. Our neighbours are having a party (despite being Demons supporters) and the house is decorated with both black/white and blue/yellow balloons. I'm actually more excited about tomorrow night's NRL Grand Final when the Melbourne Storm will be travelling up to Sydney to defend their title against the Sydney Roosters. Even their entertainment is better than ours - local band Gang Of Youths, whereas we get a Fergie-less Black-Eyed Peas! I can't understand the obsession with overseas acts - in recent years we've had The Killers, Lionel Ritchie, Meatloaf, Ed Sheeran, Tom Jones, Chris Isaac, Ellie Goulding and more. I think we should have local acts only and the same four every year:
Up Their Cazaly by Mike Brady
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxM8X...
The Holy Grail by Hunter & Collectors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX7do...
Leaps And Bounds by Paul Kelly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXgTC...
The Thing About Football - Greg Champion
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_TpH...
That way you'd get 100,000 people all singing along with gusto.

Anyway.....

Pies x 9
