theDuke | 6491 comments Well done Anita......cor..ain't I crap at this!

GWS yet again, achieves a one 'win' wonder at the finals. They need to work out how to stem their injuries...they're getting too good at amassing them!

Well...here's mine:

Tried it, didn't like it - thought it tasted sweeter than Marmite.

message 1419: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments In the 1920s Vegemite was renamed Parwill in a weak attempt to counteract the popularity of Marmite.

I was once at a school fundraising trivia night with a couple we were friends(?) with. D was a real know-it-all and kept putting his wife down. R eventually retired to the kitchen to help with the catering. When she returned, we were all stumped by the question "What slogan follows the word 'Vegemite' on the label?" R answered right away "Concentrated yeast extract" - the rest of us cheered her. They were later divorced. I am still friends with R - don't know what D is doing these days.

Every Aussie knows this one:

It's just started happening over here in the UK as well, Val.

What is Milo like? - I've seen it in a few Supermarkets over here but it is SO expensive that I haven't tried it out. I used to absolutely love Bournvita but it has sadly been discontinued here for several years now and I really do miss it terribly.

Is Milo anything like it? - chocolately and malty and not too sickly sweet?

Lez | 7490 comments My mum used to make me drink Milo when I was little as it was thought to be good for children. I remember hating it because it was very malty.

message 1428: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It sounds like I might enjoy it then ;o>

message 1429: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I spent a week in a convalescent home when I was little and every morning we were each given a spoonful of cod liver oil and one of malt. Revolting. The orange juice was nice though.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments You're still here though, Lez Lee - so maybe the Cure worked? ;o>

message 1431: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Can one get Vegimite in the UK? I've never seen it for sale in any store I've been in.

Is there much difference between them? They're both spreads made from concentrated yeast extracts, so aside from colour differences, I've always assumed they're pretty much the same thing.

message 1433: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments Ah cheers Suzy, so one can buy it here then...just not popular in my part of the world perhaps. But..the price of it....£2?! Blerdy Nora!

message 1434: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's come all the way over from Australia though, Duke ;o>

And that poor little Jar must have had to hitchhike most of the way too - just to be able to keep it's cost down when it finally got here! - LOL!!! ;o>

message 1435: by theDuke (last edited Sep 20, 2018 02:24PM) (new)

theDuke | 6491 comments I can just picture it, carrying it's few possessions in a knotted hanky on the end of a stick, in one 'hand' over it's shoulder, and the other hand, the thumb pointed out upwards, eagerly trying to draw attention to the passing truckers! lol!

Might give it a try, if I ever do come across a very well travelled jar someday.

Try looking where the Marmite and Bovril is and, if it's not there, then it might possibly be in one of those 'World Foods' areas of a Supermarket Aisle, Duke ;o>

I'm no expert but I've always thought it rather sweet and very similar to Ovaltine. As youngsters, my children would eat Milo straight from the tin. I love anything malty - my favourite is Horlicks. Bugger the drink, just let me shovel it down straight from the jar. I also liked the Horlicks sweets, but not the chocolate ones, just the original flavour. Do they still make them?

I'm also a sucker for this goody, spooned straight into the mouth:

message 1439: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22141 comments And mine:

Tigers x 22
Dees x 8

Had coffee with a mad Richmond supporter this morning. He tells me that Collingwood have only beaten one side in the top eight all season - and that was GWS last week! They did beat Melbourne earlier in the season but Melbourne weren't in the eight at that point. He reckons that if the Tigers play at their very best and the Pies play at their very best, the Tigers are still a 5 goal better side! We - and an expected crowd of about 95,000 - shall see later this evening.

Over in the west, I'm going with my heart over head. Melbourne did beat the Eagles over there during the season, but as the experts say over and over, Finals are a different ball game. The Eagles play very tall up front - Darling, Kennedy, McGovern. Melbourne are going to have to be very composed to overcome them on their home ground. The Eagles are favourites tomorrow and the consensus in the cafe this morning was that if they do win, they will easily overcome the Pies in the Grand Final. Richmond is another matter.

Val H. | 22141 comments It's a tradition here that once your season is over teams have a "Mad Monday" session - in previous years there has often been "a lot of drink taken" but nowadays there's much more emphasis on costumes. The Geelong boys always make a big effort and some of you may enjoy their 2018 rig-outs:

I've never been able to take to Ovaltine and Horlicks like I adored Bournvita - I find them both to be over-sweet and rather too rich and sickly in a way that often tends to repeat on me afterwards. Bournvita was the one that always hit the spot.

I know I can still buy Bournvita online but I'm wary of buying foodstuffs from other countries - it may not be the same as the UK version of it and the price is just far too high as well.

Horlicks Sweets? - I do vaguely remember those from a good few years ago but can't remember seeing or hearing of them any time recently, Val? I shall have to have a Google on those.

I looked up Milo last night and it has gone down in price here to around £4 for 400g which is far more reasonable than the £6+ that it was selling at when I first saw it turn up in the Supermarkets over here ... so I might just buy some and see what I think about it.

It apparently has both Chocolate and Malt in it and so it could be what I'm looking for? ;o>

EDIT : Well, Horlicks Tablets have been discontinued over here as I had thought that they were - but apparently they are still sold in Asia - and Stock bought in from Asia are available to buy from a few UK Sellers on eBay ;o>

Hmmm? - as Costumes go, there are some distinctly dodgy ones there!!! ;oO
