Bound by Magic

“Cool. While you wash up I’m going to whip us up some breakfast and try to wake up sleeping beauty there.” I jerk a thumb to the couch. “I better not have to kiss him.”

He tells me while I wash up he'll make some breakfast and try to wake up Eriks. I chuckle as he better not have to kiss him. "I'll take on for the team and kiss him." I tease as I walk pass him to head back to his room to shower.
I grab my clothes from yesterday and just decide to wear them again since I can't get to my close.

Slapping his knee lightly Eriks jolts awake and draws his gun. I push it away. “Hey! Calm down, it’s just me. Want some scrambled eggs if I make some?” I ask.
He nods sleepily as he gets around. I head into the kitchen and get started on some eggs and toast.

I wash up and get dressed in my clothes from the other day with was my blouse and dress pants. I dry my hair the best I can with a towel and head out into the kitchen.
"Mmm smells good." I tell Ezra seeing him cooking and I glance over at Eriks who was waking up. "Oh good you are up. Get ready we've got things to do today."

“Is there ever a day when you do nothing?” Mr. Cranky grumbles before taking a seat at the table. I load up three plates with scrambled eggs and toast, then quickly dig in so we can get going.

Eriks grumbles about there every bring a day when I do nothing. "Nope and that's why I can the number one detective at the station." I tease as I sit down.
"Thanks." I tell Ezra as he gives us a plate. I dig in starving.

I just shake my head, my mouth full of eggs. Then I gulp down a glass of orange juice plus milk and give Eriks a brief rundown of our schedule for today. He nods along silently in between bites and pulls out his gun again. “Will you quit with that? We don’t need a gun for an interrogation,” I sigh.

Ezra gives Eriks a run down of the schedule for today as I eat my breakfast. He nods and pulls out his gun in between bites. Ezra sighs telling him to quit that and we don't need a gun for an interrogation.
"He's right on that one. Besides I want you to hang back and watch in case we need back up or if the kids decides to split." I tell him before drinking my juice.

“Fine, but in case of emergency I’ll have it with me,” he grumbles and shoves it back into his holster. I finish up my quick breakfast and rinse off my plate before setting it in the sink. Then I grab my jacket. “Once you two are done let’s get some coffee then get on the road. My father’s place is a little ways out of town.”

Eriks grumbles fine but he'll keep it on him in case of emergency. Ezra finishes up with his breakfast and I get up to rinse off my plate and cup after him.
"Coffee, warrant and then we hit the road. Better to have that on us now then get there without it." I tell him as I slip on my shoes and grab my work bag. I head down to my car and unlock it tossing my stuff in the back as I wait for them to catch up.

I hop up in front while Eriks sits in the back. All buckled in i watch the streets go by in a flash with next to no cars on the street and us hitting all the lights green.

I stop at the coffee place to grab a cup of coffee and wait for the others to get whatever before I head to the station. I run inside to talk with someone and five minutes later I come out with the warrant.
"Boom, told you I could do it." I say with a grin as I climb back in my car. "Alright, set up the gps and let's get this road trip rolling."

I chuckle as she flashes the warrant in my face. Laughing I plug in the address into the GPS system. It automatically starts calculating the quickest route. It takes only a few minutes to get it highlighted. “He lives probably about 45 minutes outside of city limits,” I warn them both.

He chuckles and laughs as he plugs the address into the GPS system before he warns us about how his father lives probably about 45 minutes outside of the city limits.
"Well then it is a good thing that Eriks is coming along with us." I say as I sip my coffee while I drive.

In the back I hear a snort from the peanut gallery. I burst out laughing. “Someone’s spicy today,” I tease him. Looking at him in the rear view mirror he glares back at me.
“I will never understand why the chief thought you two would need a babysitter. “
“I can tell already this is gonna be a long drive for you Eriks.”

There is a snort from the back and Ezra busts out laughing. Eriks says he will never understand why the chief thought we needed a babysitter. I chuckle as Ezra says this is going to be a long ride for him.
"Well for starters Ezra is a prime suspect in the case. Plus she thinks I am in love with him or some crap and that I am going to skip town with him to keep him from being locked up." I say causally as I drink my coffee.
"Which is way off base. I just don't want to see him go down for something he didn't do." In reality I didn't want my parent's killer to get away. Not again.

Well that shuts Eriks up until we near my father’s house. I chew the inside of my cheek. It hasn’t changed. In eight years it all looks the same. The worn red barn with a few holes in the roof and a broken door hinge. The small house next to it in front of a sprinkling of trees in the back yard. The only new thing in the scene is the car. Instead of the rusty old pick up there sits a brand new Ford in all its shiny silver glory.
As I get out of the car, I wipe my sweating palms on my pants and silently pray that my father’s attitude towards me has changed. “You guys ready for this?” I ask shakily.
Shit, I didn’t realize how shaky I am... hell the last time I saw this place I was 16 with nothing but a backpack walking down the road.

I reach over and rest a hand on his arm softly. "I'm ready for this." I say with a nod and squeeze his arm softly. "We've got your back, Ezra. Promise. So don't worry about it." I add softly and get out of my car.

Swallowing hard I nod and walk up the footy path to the front door. I knock firmly and take a step back. Eriks remains at my right, just a step or two behind me. Footsteps pound the floor on the other side of the door, then pause. My heart pounds in my ears, every nerve and muscle on edge. “What do you want?!” a gruff voice spits through the door. He looked through the peephole.
I hold my hands up. “We Just need to talk to Jason,” I say calmly.
“You don’t need to do anything. Haven’t you done enough!” He snaps. “Ya got three seconds to get off my property!”
“Will you just listen? Please. We have a warrant—let me seen Jason.”
Just then the door bursts open and I find myself staring down a double barrel shot gun. My father hard gaze bores into mine as his hand rests on the trigger. “What don’t you understand? Get your ass out of here!”
Next thing I know Eriks got his gun aimed at my father.

We walk up to the front door and he knocks on the door. A gruff voice comes from the other side of the door asking what we want. Ezra holds his hands up saying that we need to talk to Jason.
The man snaps at him and Ezra tries to tell him that we have a warrant and we need to see Jason. The door bursts open and an older looking man comes out with a shoot gun pointed at Ezra.
Eriks pulls his open and I step between the two holding my hands up. "Stop." I say and look at the Ezra's father. "Sir I would like you to put the gun down before I arrest you for threatening a cop."
My tone takes a hypnotic edges as I use my magic to try to subtly defuses this. I don't like to use my magic like this but I don't need him shooting one of us.

I get the faintest trace of magic from Lani as she tries to talk him down. Instead, he spits at her and aims the shotgun at her. I swallow thickly. “You get outta here too! You’re just like him!” he screeches, his eyes blazing.
Eriks yells at him to drop his weapon, his gun still aimed at my father. My father then whirls around to aim at the detective. With his focus elsewhere I scramble: tackling him before he can pull the trigger. Eriks kicks the shotgun out of reach and follows me with a set of handcuffs ready. I call over my shoulder to Lani, “We got him! Go ahead and look for Jason!”

His father spits at me and screeches for me to get out of here too because I was like his son. Eriks yells at him to drop his weapon, his gun still aimed at Ezra's father. His father whirls around to aim at the detective. Ezra tackles him and Eriks kicks the shotgun out of reach and follows Ezra with a set of handcuffs ready.
"Got it." I say with a nod as Ezra tells me to go look for Jason. I take off into the house looking around and notice the back door is open. "Dammit." I take off looking for the kids. He must have ran when we were dealing with their father.

Something black flashes in my periphery, and I turn to watch my brother running into the barn. Making sure Eriks has my father I take off after Jason. I pause at the threshold, looking around for anywhere he could hide. “Jason, I just want to talk to you. I’m not going to hurt you,” I say softly.

I spot Ezra taking off to a barn and I follow close behind as back up just in case his brother tries to pull something. He pauses at the entrance and calls out softly that he isn't going to hurt him that he just wants to talk to him.

“Jason, please. Just come out. I won’t hurt you,” I repeat. I hear Lani Behind me i wave her to stay back. I don’t know how deep our bond goes, but I don’t want to risk it. Something rustles in the hayloft.
“You’re right. You won’t.” He replies in a cold voice. Suddenly a pain lances through my chest as if I were being stabbed in the heart. I yelp and crumble to my knees, clutching my chest—this flare up feeling a lot deeper than the others, as if I were burning inside out. My little brother then hops down from the loft and grins darkly at me. A violet crystal hangs from a thin iron chain about his neck, glowing brightly. Then he steps towards me and crouches next to me. He yanks my wrist and sliced open my vein with the pointed edge of the necklace. I wince and try to pull away but pain lances through my skull. “Don’t you just love blood magic?” He sighs happily, then he looks up to see Lani.
“Hello there.” He smirks.

Ezra tries against to call out to him and he waves me to stay back for now. A voice from above says he's right, he won't. Ezra drops to his knees clutching his chest in pain. My own chest clenching in a phantom pain.
A young man drops down with a violet crystal around his neck that glows brightly as he crouches down next to Ezra. "Stop!" I call out as he slices Ezra's wrist with the necklace. Jason sighs happily and looks up at me.
"No I'm not particularly fond of blood magic. Since it is a forbidden art and corrupts a magic user completely." I say with a glare as he smirks at me. My eyes glow as I take a step forward.

The crystal glows a furious red when it touches my blood. Jason laughs. “Hah! I’m not a magic user, aren’t I? He’s the one leaving his mark behind.” He pulls on my wrist for emphasis
“Don’t you fucking Touch her, you little brat—ah!” Another intense flare up makes my stomach churn. I hiss between clench teeth but he forces me back to my feet. We stand roughly the same height though he’s got an inch on Me as I sag against his shoulder. My eyes widen watching my pain affect Lani. Jason must have seen it too. “So it is true...”

He laughs and says but he isn't a magic user so it was only Ezra's mark left behind. He tugs in Ezra's arm as he tells him not to touch me. I frown as I hear him piss in pain. Jason tugs him back up to his feet and looks at me surprised.
"So maybe it is. I don't think you know what you are up against, little boy." I growl as my eyes glow red. "I can destroy cities without even trying. You would be an ant under my boot if I felt like destroying you."

He cackles, then he grabs me in a chokehold with a pocket knife pressed to my artery. I pale, too weak to fight between the blood trickling down my wrist and the flare ups. “But I do know what happens to you should he die,” he threatens her.

He cackles and then puts Ezra in a chokehold with a pocket knife pressed to his neck. I growl watching him carefully. He threatens me with what would happen to me if he kills Ezra.
"Really? Would you place your life on that knowledge, you little snot nose poser? Because you could kill him and I could still be standing. What happens after that is I will destroy you in the most painful way imaginable. They won't even be able to identify what is left of your body." I snarl as my hands glow.
"You want to take that gamble? Because I promise you it end with your death and not mine."

I grunt as the blade digs into my throat. “You know shit, Jason,” I gasp. His grip tightens.
“I know enough that he paid you more attention than me,” he spits out. I look to him.
“Jason, don’t you realize he fucking beat me?!” I snap at him. “You don’t want that kind of attention!”
He growls at me. “At least he fucking talked to you! It was like he never knew I was there!” He shouts in my ear. My eyes flick to Lani.

Ezra grunts and he gasps saying he doesn't know shit. The two argue over their father and I frown hearing their father beat Ezra. Ezra's eyes flick to mine and I smirk a little looking at his brother.
"You know stealing magic from your brother isn't going to gain his attention. Hell from the sounds of it if he hears you have an then he'll cast you out." I tell him and cross my arms. "Killing him won't either. So drop the knife before I have to make you."

That’s when Jason’s grip starts to let up, his arms shaking. “Jason, let me go,” I say softly.
“I would’ve made him pay attention...” he says, his voice cracking. He loosens his grip on the knife until it falls to the ground. Moving carefully I pull free of him and turn, folding him into an embrace as he starts sobbing.

His grip starts to loosen and Ezra tells him to let him go. Jason's voice cracks as he says he would have made him pay attention.
"Magic doesn't work like that Jason. You can only influence a person if there is a drop of belief on what you are trying to convince them. Your father hates magic, he would have never been swayed by it." I say softly. He drops the knife and Ezra pulls away. He hugs his brother to him as he starts to sob.
I sigh glad to see Ezra was safe now. But this meant Jason couldn't have been my parent's killer. He was too young. Heck I don't think he even killed those people. That left the question of who did though.

I take a deep breath and look up to see Eriks talking with almost the entire police force. Then I see child services show up too. A representative comes over to talk with Jason, who goes easily. I sigh and look to Lani. “I don’t think he meant to use magic to influence him—not in the way you’re thinking, Lani,” I whisper.
No. I think my brothers intentions were that tame per se—he has too much hate towards him for that. Flashbacks of the childhood abuse come to mind. It wouldn’t be out of the question. More often than not Jason saw what happened.

Eriks was talking with the rest of the police force and child services shows up as well to talk with Jason. Ezra tells me he doesn't think Jason meant to use magic how I thought.
"I know he wouldn't... it still would have been the same idea. Forcing another to look at your point of view, understand your pain. Even if you had to kill them."
I sigh and look at him. "You should let the medic check out your arm." I tell him.

My gaze falls back to my still bleeding arm. Oh. Just then a first responder comes over to check us both out, first taking care of my wrist.

He glances back to his wrist and the medics come over to check on us. I insist they take care of him first. I was fine after all. Once they are done checking me over I head back to my car.
I still had a case to solve if I wanted to prove that Ezra didn't kill those people. Because I don't think Jason did. I felt he was a distraction in all this. A red herring.

After finally getting the medic off my back I jog back over to Alanis car and slide into the front seat with her, watching as the wheels in her head start turning. “Where to go now,” I sigh in thought. “I don’t think this was a set up but it feels more than a hell of a coincidence.”

Ezra jogs over and gets in my car before I pull away. I pause and look at him as he asks where to go now. I sigh and look at him.
"You are done for the night, Ezra. I'll drop you off at your apartment and you can rest up. I'm going to head back to the station and fill out some paper work." I tell him.

“Nope, I’m not. We’re both working this case, it’s only fair that we each do our part and help with the paperwork,” I argue, almost protectively for Lani. “I’ll rest when we find out what the hell is going on with this whole situation.”

He tells me he is not and that it is only fair we do our parts. "No, you are done for the night. Go home and rest up. Heck you look like you can barely be upright even now." I tell him. "I'm not going to do anything just some paperwork and research."
I look at him seriously. "I want you to rest and that is final."

I sigh. “Alright,” I agree with her. Then Eriks comes by and slides in the backseat, looking equally as drained.
“CPS May be taking Jason. In the house they found more than enough evidence to arrest him for child neglect,” he tells us as he rubs his eyes. Then he slouches back in his seat and leans against the window.

I sigh as he says alright and Eriks comes in and fills us in with what was going down with Jason. I nod having a feeling that they would have found some evidence to arrest the father.
"You and Ezra are going back to his apartment and I'm going to go do some paperwork and research at the station. I'll be back when I am done."

“Sounds good to me. Hey rookie, how about some pizza when we get back? My treat,” Eriks offers from the backseat. I nod gratefully.
“Sounds good. I’ll take care of drinks,” I answer, leaning my head back as we start the 45 minute drive back to the city

Eriks tells us that sounds good and he'll great some pizza. "Save me a slice or two for when I get back." I tell them as I drive us back to the city. It was a quiet ride since both guys are exhausted and I am busy trying to figure what I missed on this case. There had to be something.

“I’ll do you one better: I’ll just order two. Those bitches better deliver though cause I’m not going anywhere else tonight,” Eriks pouts as we’re dropped off in front of my building. Laughing I pull out my keys and let’s us into the building, waving bye to Lani before we head inside. By the time we get to my apartment Eriks got two pepperoni pizzas and a two-liter of coke on the way.

"Perfect." I say with a nod when Eriks says he'll order two. "You two behave." I call out as they head up to Ezra's apartment. I head back to the station and I head inside only to see a few of the night shift police around my office.
"What's going on?" I ask them and then see the inside of my office. Pictures of the bodies from out case were plastered over every square inch of my office. At the heart of it was old pictures of my parents bodies from they night they were killed.
I stumble a little and one of the guys catches my arm. Red paint... at least I hope it was paint was written over the photos.
You're next.
"You should go home, Clare. Stick it out with the Rookie and Eriks until we get this stuff bagged and looked over to for clues." The captain says resting her hand on my shoulder.
"Yea." I say hollowly with a nod. I turn without another word and head back out to my car, calling up Ezra to let him know I was comes back.
I glance up over my shoulder as he tells me that the shower is open whenever I want to head in. "Thanks. I got the ball rolling on the warrant. We should have it by noon if everything goes as it should." I tell him.
I stretch out a little and close down my laptop as I get up. "I'm going to go hop in the shower and then we can go some coffee, because I am going to need it." I tell him.
