Bound by Magic

We get to the crime scene and we wait well the forensic team does their thing. I stumble a bit and grab Ezra's arm as the residual magic reaches me. It overwhelms me a bit in my weakened state but there was no doubt. Same trace as the first crime scene.

He pulls me to the side and keeps me side as he whispers in my ear about mentioning this to the Captain. "Not yet. Wait until we get more evidence." I mumble taking a breath.

He nods and the forensics team finishes up on the crime scene, so we are finally allowed inside. We step inside and I hold back from gagging. The stench of death was heavy in the air as well as the magic.
"You okay?" I ask Ezra as he braces himself against the wall looking like he was going to be sick.

He huffs he is fine but the magic was getting to him. He stands up a little straighter and we start to examine the crime scene. It was a lot like the other scene. I bend down next to where the body had been.
I touch a spot of blood and take a breath as the vision of the death over takes me. I stare blankly ahead for several minutes and then sigh as I collapse.
I used to much magic today but the killer was the same. The scene was the same as the other one.

I put up my hands. “We’ve both have focused all our energy into solving this. Lani and I are just trying to do our job,” I answer vaguely, biting the inside of my cheek as another flare up sends a shiver down my spine.

I feel him catch me and scoop me up into his arms. He rushes me out of the building to the medic. I pant softly as he lays me on a stretcher and the medic checks my vitals. I heard the chief giving Ezra a hard time about us becoming incapacitated during this case.
"I'm fine, captain. I just draw too much from my reserves. I'll be find after a good night sleep." I assure her. "We can handle this case." I can feel Ezra's magic flare and mine weakly tries to reach out to his.

“Captain! We both just said we’ve been working our asses off trying to find the unsub!” I snap impatiently at the Captain, who just gawks at me. Then her eyes narrow.
“Watch yourself, rookie!” She warns me. I glare at her.
“What have you been doing to further this investigation, Captain,” i hiss back with emphasis on her title. She pales. My magic flares again, just to flicker out like a candle in the wind.

I look at Ezra surprised as he snaps at the Captain about taking us off the case. She tells him to watch it and he hisses at her about what has she been doing to further this investigation.
I feel his magic flare up again and flicker out. "Enough, Ezra." I say resting an arm over my eyes for a second and then sit up, swinging my feet off the stretcher.
"We are staying on this case, Captain. You know there is no one else who can find this guy like I can. If you take us off this, then you are doing injustice to the families of the victims who want this killer found."

The captain opens her mouth and then closes it as she spins off on her heels and goes to talk with the forensics team. Ezra takes a breath and rubs his eyes as he shakes his head.
"Well that was fun." I say sarcastically as I get up from the stretcher still feeling a little light headed but I would live. "I'm head back to the station. You coming?"

He sighs saying he is coming and follows me back to the car. He asks where to go from here and if he can track his magic to whoever is using it.
"You could but it would take you actually using magic to do it. You prepared to do that?" I ask him as I climb into my car.

He says if it will stop the flare up then yes. He asks if I would help him control his magic. I sigh and rub my eyes a little before I look at him.
"I could but understand that your magic and mine are matched. Releasing your magic and using it freely will complete the bond that should have happened the first day we met but since your magic is repressed it didn't." I explain.

He asks me about what the bond is. "Every major and minor magic user has a match. Kind of their magical compliment. So my best bet is you are a minor user since I am a major. There are rare cases of matches being the same level but like I said it is rare." I explain as I drive.
"It is mainly just a matching of magic but most believe that it is a soul mate kind of thing. That the users are meant to be together. I am still on the fence about believing that though."

He nods and asks if I though it wasn't real but I met him. I shake my head a little. "My parents were matched. So I grew up believing in the idea. I just doubted I would find mine. "Don't worry I'm not one of these girls who swoons and sighs over the idea of souls mates. Nor do I expect you to have to be mine."

I blush a little as he says that he can't see me swooning over someone but he thinks I would be the one to make people swoon.
I roll my eyes and focus on driving as I pull into the lot. He says he wants to control his magic better even just for the case. "Fine, come over to my place tonight and we'll get to work on figuring out how you can center and focus your magic."

He agrees and then waits for me to walk in with him. He tells me how he has been trying to profile the killer but there hasn't been much to connect the murders and find the motive.
"Mmm maybe but it seems a bit random to be that. I mean if that was there plan it would be a lot more public and a high body count. They would be trying to send a clear message. Here it is unclear that they are trying to do."

“True,” i sigh and shove my hand in my pockets. “It didn’t look like a personal attack—neither of the victims did.” I rub my jaw in deep thought

Lani
He sighs and says that is true as he sticks his hands in his pockets. He rubs his jaw as he adds that it didn't look like a personal attack on the victims either.
"Yeah, it's weird." I agree as I head to my office. I open up the door and freeze. My heart stops and I pale. On my desk sat a necklace... My mother's necklace. The one she was wearing the night her and dad were killed.
He had been here. My parents killer had been here and he was fucking toying with me.

She freezes in her office doorway. Pausing at her side I follow her troubled gaze to the simple necklace displayed on her desk as is it were waiting for her appearance. “What is it, Lani?”

Lani
He asks me what is it. "It's... it was my mother's." I walk forward and reach out with a trembling hand. My fingers brush the metal. The silver metal now stained a sickly copper tone by dried blood.
The vision over takes me quickly and I experience my mother's death. The harsh and quickness of it. She never had a chance to fight back but she saw her killer.
I stumble backwards away from it, tears running down my face.

As Lani stumbles back I loop my arm around her and brace her against my chest. I watch the tears stream down her cheeks. Shushing her quietly I turn her to face me and press her face in my shoulder. I pat her back soothingly and just hold her as she Let’s it’s all out. Glancing at the necklace, an icy chill shoots down my spine. I swallow. I don’t need to touch it to get the slideshow. I force my own fear back and focus my energy into comforting Lani.

I feel his arms loops around me and brace me against him. He starts to shush me softly as he turns me to face him and presses my face to his shoulder. I clutch his shirt as I cry. His hand patting my back, trying to comfort me.
"I need to get out of here, please." I say in between sniffles. Get away from that horrible reminder.

Without a word, I lift her small frame into my arms and carry her out of the building. Though my bike is parked behind the station, I find her keys in her pocket and help her into the car. I hesitant prying her hands from me, but it’s safer than having her on my bike. I take care in getting her strapped in before shutting the door.
Backing out of the parking lot, I take us home and from there carry her to my apartment.
Killer
I hiss as that halfling’s magic yet again sputters. I should have killed him already—that would have been so much easier than slowly draining him. But where’s the fun in that? At least by siphoning his magic he’s drawn to little Lani. I rub my hands together. Better yet! Maybe I should wait until they complete their bond... hell be dead and she’ll be powerless. Decisions, decisions....

He lifts me up into his arms and carries me out to the parking lot. He finds my keys in my pocket and helps me into my car. He pries my hands off his shirt softly and buckles me in as I sit there sniffling. Feeling small and weak.
He gets in and drives us back to our apartment building before he carries me up to his apartment. I bury my face against his neck, clinging to him. My body trembling slightly.
After all this time. Why? Why now? Why come after me now? The thought of him holding onto my mother's necklace all this time like some sick trophy makes me sick to my stomach.

I could only imagine what is going through her head—at least I have the decency in knowing not to say anything. However, this does help me with his profile. A personal attack on Lani. He gives her a memento so long after the fact—for the maximum amount of pain perhaps?
No matter. I sit on my couch with her curled in my arms. I had pulled a blanket around her shoulders as she cried. Before I know it I have my lips pressed to her forehead in a brief kiss before I hold her head back to my shoulder and stroke her hair.

He sits on the couch with me still curled up in his arms. He pulls a blanket around me as I continue to cry, the tears can't seem to stop flowing. His lips press to my forehead, my sobs stop for a second surprised by his actions.
He rests my head back against his shoulder as he strokes my hair. I start to calm down after a bit and rub my face a little trying to wipe away the tears. "Thanks." I say softly. "Sorry about your shirt." I add seeing it was all wet from my tears.

“Don’t worry about it. It can be washed,” I reply calmly with a loose smile. Then I reach across to the end table and grab a couple tissues from the box. Handing her one, I use the other to wipe the tears from her eyes—gently.

He tells me not to worry about it and it can be washed. He gives me a smile and reaches out to grab some tissues. He hands me one and uses the other to wipes the tears from my eyes.
I blow my nose completely ungracefully, feeling like a little kid again. My mom use to do this when I cried. "Thanks for everything, Ezra. I owe you one." I say softly truly grateful for his help and comfort.

“You don’t owe me anything,” I tell her as I take the tissues from her and pat her head. Sitting back in place i rub my eyes and yawn. “Do you want to stay here for the night?” I offer, hating the idea of her being alone—at least while this asshole is still out there taunting her like a coward.

He tells me I don't owe him anything and takes the tissues from me. He pats my head and sits back yawning. He asks if I want to stay her for the night. I bite my lip a little thinking about it.
"If it isn't too much trouble. I would like to." I say softly.

“No problem. Here, I’ll show you my room,” I say, scooting her off my lap so I can get up. Then I take her hand and lead to my bedroom with a full size bed. “Ignore the mess... I don’t usually have people over,” I say sheepishly as I stretch out on one side of the bed, leaving the other half open for her.

He says no problem and he'll show me to his room. He scoots me off his lap to get up and takes my hand in his as he leads me over to his room. He tells me to ignore the mess and he usually doesn't have people over.
I laugh a little. "No worries. My room isn't much better." I admit and blush as he stretches out on one side of the be implying we could share it.
"Um I'm going to go grab some pajamas from my place if that is okay. My uniform isn't the most fun to sleep in." I tell him.

“You can borrow a pair of mine—it’s just one night. Top drawer in my dresser there should be some shirts and sweat pants,” I mumble to her sleepily, rolling towards her to point to my dresser in the corner of the room. My eyes flutter, struggling to stay open.

He tells me I can borrow some of his since it is just for tonight. He mumbles where they are and rolls over to point at the dresser. His eyes start to flicker close looking like he was about to fall asleep.
"Thanks." I say softly and go over to find something that fits. I slip away to the bathroom and change into them. The shirt and pants were still a bit big on me but at let the pants had a draw string.
I head back out and look at him. "You going to get changed?" I ask thinking he couldn't be comfortable like that.

I shrug as I hug a pillow, my eyes fully closed now. “Eh. Probably not. I’m too tired to move,” i slur sleepily. Turning my face away i yawn and stretch out on my side, calling a soft “Goodnight” to Lani over my shoulder.

He shrugs and hugs a pillow to him. His eyes closed as he slurs probably not but he was too tired to move. He turns his face away and yawns before he stretches, saying goodnight.
I shake my head and walk around to his side of the bed. I least get his shoes off and then head back around to my side of the bed. I curl up, hugging a pillow to my chest and close my eyes.
"Night Ezra." I whisper softly.

My screech Of an alarm clock wakes me up the next morning st the ass crack of dawn. Groaning into my pillow and bang my fist on it until it shuts up. I burrow my face under the covers but pry one eye open tiredly.

I groan softly and roll over as an alarm goes off and I hear Ezra groan as well as he hits his alarm clock. He burrows under the cover and I chuckle softly as I softly start to wake up.
The night hadn't been too bad. I only woke up once screaming and crying from nightmares. He had comforted me until I fell back asleep and after that I had slept peacefully.
"C'mon rookie. Got to get up." I say as I sit up and stretch a little.
He tells me fine by him and helps me to the car. He asks me if I need him to drive but just puts me in the passenger seat. He shuts the door and I buckle up with a sigh. I reach my head against the seat. I rest as he drives us to the crime scene.
