He is taken to a crappy jail cell where he is mistreated - he discovers another inmate's finger in his stew - and is scared for his life. Later the evil scientist running the study explains it was all a hoax to track his emotional state to test the device.

I read the book maybe 15 years ago and I think it was quite recent. Can't remember anyone's name.
