Note: I think I was the one who created the entry for this isbn, so the skewed font problem may have appeared later. I did a search for the mutated font using "să" and got a bunch of results, also discovering other misaligned Romanian diacritics (like î instead of î or ș instead of ș). This may be a recent database problem.

I will stop here. I just discovered that this rendering problem appears in Firefox and Edge, while under Chrome the fonts are displayed correctly.

I would say the problem should be reported to Support (support @ goodreads.com). Excellent work discovering it; it has bothered me for a long time, but then I always use Firefox.

I use Firefox as well, and I've seen it a few times. Knew there was a problem but didn't think of Firefox.

It is possible it only looks better in chrome, while it is still incorrectly added. I'm not understanding all technical details, but some places write a letter with a diacritic not as one symbol, but as two separate symbols. If it looks correctly in one browser and wrong in the other, it means it is added as two symbols. When making an edit you can also spot the difference, if you use the backspace, you can remove the diacritic while the letter stays, which means there are two symbols.

I received a reply from tech support - they were unable to replicate the problem. On my end, I got the same results on two PCs running Win10 and also on a fresh install of Firefox on a Mac.

Has anyone found diacritics other than Romanian which show up wrong?

Yes, though I probably couldn't supply an example. If I see it, I correct it. But I've seen it in French for sure, and I think other languages as well. As Renske says above, the accented letter uses 2 spaces if you backspace to replace it.

German! Happens to the "ö", "ü" and "ä". I think it's not a browser problem, I know this from pdfs and other programs such as InDesign etc. It is as Renske says. So I think it should be corrected if it is written in 2 signs... Cheers!

It is a font encoding problem. If you go into Firefox/Options/General/Language and Appearance/Fonts & Colors and click on Advanced, there is a default option there to Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above. If you deselect that, the browser displays everything in its pre-selected font (TNR for instance) and the problem goes away (if that font contains your language's diacritics, which TNR probably will). The page doesn't look as neat though.

For Chrome, its manual encoding switch has been eliminated since version 55 and the browser automatically adjusts how the fonts are rendered.

I don't know about diacritics, but Greek text looks terrible on Goodreads because all of the π and μ characters are rendered a different size compared to the surrounding text. (Bigger if you're looking at a book page, smaller if you're looking at the title in your library.) Happens in Chrome and Firefox, too.

For example:

NONE of the π or μ characters in these two titles should be uppercase but they look that way. It looks strange in the middle of words. It seems like the π and μ characters are coming from the math symbols range rather than the Greek alphabet range.

Hi Lindoula,

I just did a test in Firefox by deselecting the option to Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above. The size misalignment for π and μ went away (looking at your links).

You can experiment with the font selection for Greek, but the default is Times New Roman and it displays the characters correctly.

My font is set to Times New Roman and I'm still getting that. ETA: And yes, I have it set NOT to allow pages to override my font selections. Still the badly rendered Greek characters. It only occurs on Goodreads, too.
