Ummm.. I need to be positive... It's a great tv screen... Otherwise I agree Michael. It obviously all went wrong because the Queen refused to skydive in.
It all went wrong because they drafted in someone who specialised in organising school nativity plays.

I've spent the entire evening uploading a book into createspace. Bloody hell! It's sequentially easy, but then they want you to do all that US tax stuff all over again. Why couldn't they just link to your Amazon account? Createspace is after all part of the same outfit.Completely forgot the games were on, thank goodness.
Michael wrote: "It all went wrong because they drafted in someone who specialised in organising school nativity plays."Err - school nativity plays aren't organised. Or is that the point you're making. (Asks he who didn't watch it.)

I left out a question mark. Here it is : ?
Michael wrote: "I wonder if those Yorkshire terriers are going to shit all over the place."Spooky. I just had the same thought. It would spice it up if we had a blue Peter moment.
I kept commenting that the average age of some of the smaller teams seemed to be over 50, then when the Welsh team came on in rather lovely red dresses, I said I thought they'd got lost on a hen party they were so young and blonde :)And isn't Rod Stewart dead by now? His singing talent died along time ago.
The Welsh team looked lovely, I had no idea there was a beauty category.Rod Stewart is about as Scottish as a pizza and has the stage athleticism of a dalek.
I've been reading the opening chapters of my little story into a microphone - bloody good it is too, if I say so myself (the microphone, not the story). Haven't been near a telly since monday!
Just watched a clip of the opening ceremony cause one of the guys from my theatre group was a dancer in it (you see him when they start the tunnocks tea cake dance). I have to admit I'm not very impressed but maybe it's different if you are actually a Scot, perhaps the country is full of hairy Scots in terrible outfits yelling "FRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" this morning
Welcome to the clichéwealth games. Scotland is a truly beautiful place that has given the world the peerless pleasure of uisge beatha aka the water of life aka whisky aka "make mine a double".
I can never understand why they don't make more of that rather than reminding us of a history that largely consists of losing the battles that mattered, never winning a war and being constantly annoyed by (and/or jealous of) the English.
It's all a cunning plot by the 'No' campaign to make the Scots feel they're incompetent and had better remain part of the UK.Talking of which, was anyone else struck by the resemblance between the Games' mascot Clyde and Alex Salmond? Oh, just me then.
Budget of these Commonwealth Games = £575 millionCost Of London Olympic Games = £8.77 Billion
I think Clyde looks more like Nicola Sturgeon actually.

Hate to say it, but for me it's all money wasted
I have to agree with you Jim, but then I have no interest whatsoever with these sporting events. Why do they have to have such excessive opening ceremonies that just get bigger, more expensive and more stupid each time as they try to out do whoever held them the time before.
Just to clarify, I'm not disputing the games themselves just the opening ceremonies. I think the games are great for athletes and people who have interests in sports and they can provide great role models for kids too.
Oh I quite agree. Let's just stick to the sport, if we must. And all you need for that is a field really.
after watching the latest news footage from Gaza at 7pm I didn't feel much like watching people prancing about trying to define Scottish identity, not that it wouldn't have been the same if it had been an English or Welsh theme
Rosemary (The Nosemanny) wrote: "Oh I quite agree. Let's just stick to the sport, if we must. And all you need for that is a field really."Best comment so far. I love this site, because it's full of good people and good posts, but one or two comments about Scotland have been below the belt, in my view.
Best to stick to the sport and I'll say no more on the subject.

Didn't the Scots have a hand in winning World War II? I'm fairly sure it wasn't just the Americans.
I have a friend from Northern Ireland who lives in England now who is obsessed with Scotland and Scottish Independance. The way she talks you'd think Scottish people do nothing but slag off the English (it does concern me that she will be giving this impression to everyone that she meets). She talks about Scots hating the English more than everyone I know in Scotland combined and has to bring Scottish Independance into anything that has something to do with the UK. Why does she even care? It won't affect her. It'll affect me and I don't even care as much as she does. This may seem random but I woke up to a text from her saying "Just started watching commonwealth opening. How much is this going to be about Scottish Independance!!"
I didn't watch it so I can't comment and to be honest I don't really care and does it even matter? Rant over!
Darren - well, yes, but strictly that was a world war with most of the world on one side, Germany, Italy & Japan on the other and Switzerland in the middle. So pretty much everyone had a hand in winning that one.
Italy took turns on both sides, so they both won and lost that particular war.Hungary & Romania & Finland fought with the Germans, or at least the Finns were opposing the Russians
Under a little duress, I would suggest...So apart from the roads, the aqueducts and law and order, what exactly have the Romans ever done for us?

I thought the germans won? They did in this history book I've been reading

Ha! I watched this for the first time on Tuesday night

Hungary under Ferenc Szálasi was Fascist and happily leapt to the Axis cause. Hungary has a dire tradition of targeting minorities, they were particularly gleeful in helping the Nazis round up and exterminate the Hungarian Jews, and now the Roma as the country lurches to the Right once again.
The Romanian fascist group The Iron Guard were part of the coalition government that entered the war and sought to introduce expressly anti-semitic laws.

WW2 can been seen as a European civil war between the forces of 'left' and 'right'
