Heather Piper | 14 comments My reading challenge is quite simple this year. I read nearly nothing last year, maybe three books. My plan is to read 20 books this year. I have made a good start so far, and I am nearly done with one that I have been trying to read for three years.

I am listing the books that I have read, not the ones that I plan to read, as my plans change from time to time, and my reading changes depending upon my moods, and what I want to read.
1. Outlander
2. Lilac Girls
3. When We Were the Kennedys: A Memoir from Mexico, Maine
4.Spirit Legacy
5. The Devil In The White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments Which is the book that you've been trying to read for three years?

Good luck reaching your goal in 2018! Happy reading :)

Heather Piper | 14 comments Devil in the White City. I have started it so many times, and then left it on the shelf.

Oh, I read that last year and I did rather enjoy it! But I love true-crime :)
What is it about it that keeps making you put it down? Are you not finding it interesting or is it the writing style or something else entirely?

Heather Piper | 14 comments I got bogged down at the beginning, with all the names and locations. Then I got distracted by another book and never went back. The length of books doesn't distract me. I have read longer and shorter books, Pillars of the Earth as an example.

I am making good progress now and have reached page 269. Soon to get this one finished. I also finished two other books this week.

I am enjoying it, though there seems to be some slow parts that could be sped up or deleted.

Thanks.

Lisa Grønsund | 6163 comments I totally get that, Heather :) And I agree, that there are certain parts that just seem to drag on. I believe I read it over the course of 1½-months alongside two other books, simply because sometimes I just needed that break from all the information I was being handed.

I have attempted it a number of times and I like you Lisa love true crime, someone told me to buy it on audible and give it a shot that way so I might do that this year.

I can imagine an audio book would definitely help with this book. I was trying to think back if there was a specific moment where it just switched in my reading experience, but I don't remember where it might've been :)

I look forward to seeing what both of you think of it once you finish :)

Michele (llama888) | 108 comments Heather,
I have the same problem with Devil in the White City. I have started it twice and just can not get into it, and I love true crime.
After reading your comments I think I will try it again.

Heather Piper | 14 comments I finished last night. Disappointed by the last 1/3 of the book. I think about the middle half could have been edited down, and the last section wrap up was lame.
