How Important Is It For A Book to Get in the Best Sellers Ranking on Amazon?

How does the Best Seller Ranking affect the sales of the book?
What experience do you as an author expect, because of that ranking? What have you experienced when your book has started to move up in the best seller ranking?
I would appreciate having a better understanding of this since both of my books seem to be moving up in the Best Seller Ranking. My first book is beginning to rank in the eBooks and the second one for the book in print. I didn't know to get excited or not since I haven't been sent a check as yet. I would like to know if it is meaningful, or just blue sky. I would appreciate hearing from all who have had experience in this part of their promotional work.
