Wren Figueiro | 215 comments At my computer with the door to the room shut. Has to be at least mostly quiet. That's for serious blocks of writing. For random scenes that I don't want to forget I write them in a notebook or any scrap of paper available at the time.

John DeMarco (johnmichaeldemarco) Early in the morning in my parlor, with music on, or in a coffee shop.

Chloe Testa | 11 comments I pretty much do what almost everyone in this thread does and use my laptop mostly to write. It's so much easier than writing with pen and paper and I've got a huge lump on my middle finger which makes writing with a pen for long periods of time pretty painful :( I do use my phone quite a lot too, it's pretty handy for when bits and pieces, snippets of conversation or whatnot hit you in weird and wonderful places (often on long journeys - the amount of times I have to pull over to jot something down is almost ridiculous).

I always find I do my writing best late at night, which is a bloody nuisance when you've got to get up at the crack of dawn. It's like my mind goes 'oh hey you wanna sleep? Nope, got an idea for you instead'. Anyone else find they write better at specific times of the day?

Alan Black | 4 comments I write at home or at work among all the chaos when I get any chance at all. It's hard to break away from my work and then get back into it, but I really have no other choice.
I've found that pretty much the only way I can write is to write my first draft out by hand in a notebook. When I go to type it for a second draft it helps so much to be working with a hand written copy that I can quickly edit anything out or write more in. For some reason when my work is typed up it feels more permanent and I'm less likely to give it the solid edit it needs. Is that just me or does anyone else feel the same way?

message 55: by Jami (new)

Jami Brumfield I write anywhere the mood strikes me. I can write in chaos or quiet but prefer to have music playing in the background. I carry my laptop and a back up notebook and pen wherever I go so if an idea hits me I can write it down and not forget. :-)

Lolz, my brain does that to me too. Having chronic insomnia helps so I get a lot of work done since I can't sleep. I tend to work better at night anyway.

Becky Johnson | 105 comments Usually I write on my laptop with my cat perched under my arm or half on my lap. I have gotten pretty good at typing around her!

message 58: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda Ramos (yramosseventhsentinel) I think I'm going to get a cat. Love them, I miss my little dog Tofu, he always sat in my lap when I wrote.

Amanda Lyles (gobbledygook) | 30 comments Okay. That settles it. I have to move so I can get a pet. I think I want a dog instead of a cat though.

Renee E | 335 comments Ferrets are really under-represented in the writer community!

message 61: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Lyles (gobbledygook) | 30 comments They get into everything though. And they hide things, shiny things that I might need, like keys.

message 62: by Renee E (new)

Renee E | 335 comments LOL! I've had cats — and Terriers who did that too.

Filas just keep poking you with their big noses or swacking you with those ginormous paws until you listen to what they have to tell you. Or rooting their noggins under your arm and tossing it up in the air while you're trying to keyboard.

And if you don't pay attention they mutter and grumble at you. And SIGH.

Amanda Lyles (gobbledygook) | 30 comments Snakes make pretty good companions. I used to have a python and she was awesome!

message 64: by Yolanda (new)

Yolanda Ramos (yramosseventhsentinel) Snakes!! Yikes!!. Bet you write horrors with giant anacondas...

message 65: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Lyles (gobbledygook) | 30 comments Nope. Urban fiction. My books are about mermaids.

Eva Vanrell (evavanrell) | 300 comments Y'all just made my day. I'll opt for a sparkling unicorn... a tiny one so it can sit on my lap or gallop around the laptop ;)

message 67: by Renee E (new)

Renee E | 335 comments Hmmm . . . one of the horses I take care of for a friend, the elderly Paint, follows me around like a dog and has tried to get in the car with me. My friend refers to him as "Renee's big white dog."

Somehow I don't think he'd be the best writing familiar though :D
