I wish you first off the best of luck with your degree and your reading. Is there a book you can't wait to read or a challenge you can't wait to sign up for? Enjoy exploring and let us know if you need anything.

message 603: by Julia (new)

Julia Hi everyone!
I'm Julia and from Austria. Soon I'll be 17 years old. I love to read fantasy novel/ series, romance books. Sometimes I also like to read some science fiction and historical books.
My reading goal for this year is only 20 books because I try to read only english books, so I'm slower and I'm abroad for 3 months to work and explore the world abroad.
I'm looking forward to talk with you guys about bookish things.

mussolet (sovotchka) | 615 comments Hi everyone!

I'm not new here (in fact I was once on the welcome committee - good job to all of you), but work and stress and life got in the way of me reading almost anything for the past three years or so.

But now I am getting back into it, so I wanted to say hi again, and meet all the new faces :).
It's not the new year, but whatever, no time like the present to start fresh :).

I think I will focus on my personal challenge this year, and then see where I stand with reading next year, so that I know I will be able to do all the reading before committing to a group challenge or read :).

Oh, about my reading habits: I enjoy nonfiction about art, history, travel and culture, magic realism, some fantasy, and literary fiction from around the world.

Nice to meet you all (again) :).

message 610: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 139 comments Hi! My name is Missy and I have made it a goal this year to make more time for reading. Last year, I read only 2 books and so I decided to challenge myself to read 12 this year.

I mostly enjoy historical fiction, but love modern fiction as well.

I love recommendations and have read several this year that others had recommended. I’m going to exceed my goal, as I’m up to 11 already. I’m so glad that I’ve made the change to put down my phone and get lost in a book more often.

Thanks so much for the welcome!

I like spiritual, science fiction and sefl - development books. I already finished 4. I am reading 'Man's search for meaning' and 'Storytelling with data' and try to finish them this month.

I glad to join with you guys and get suggestions from you.

Mel (mellie-b) Hi!

I'm Mel. I live in Canberra, Australia.

I joined GoodReads a week ago when I got a Kindle, and I love it. This year my goal is to read 12 books. Thought I would start a little easy since I haven't been reading that much the last couple of years.

I enjoy Crime both fictional and true, but I am open to other genres and stories as well.

I will have to try and join in on some conversations in here.

Lubia Vinhas | 1 comments Hello,

My name is Lubia and I am from Brazil.
I love reading, specially historical fiction and misteries.
I've been in Goodreads for a while, but it this is the first group I've joined. My expectation is to engage with other reads to get suggestions about good books, and even exchange impressions.
My challenge for 2018 is 15 books, 13 so far... :-)

message 617: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Biggs Hi everyone!

I'm Hannah, 25 from the UK.

I'm a literature graduate and so typically, have really sped up with my reading now I've finished my studies!

A fan of the classics e.g. Wilde, Austen, Bronte, Orwell, Tolstoy. Fantasy e.g. Tolkien, Pullman, Pratchett. Historical fiction e.g. McEwan, Atwood, Gregory, Sansom. I'm recently getting more into non-fiction - currently reading Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge (Hola Our Shared Shelf!) and also Guns, Germs and Steal by Diamond, Jared (Would definitely recommend if you're interested in social evolution/geography/microbiology).

Currently in a bit of a rut and unable to settle on one book so end up flitting between 3-4, not finishing any of them! Usually I'll keep doing this until one sticks so I'm hoping a few challenges will get me to finish a few on my 'currently reading' list.

So happy to have found Goodreads! By far one of the most positive communities on the internet.

I look forward to getting more involved and connecting with my fellow readers ( feel free to add me! ).

All the best!

I've only joined the challenge in the last month.
Currently I am in a cycle of reading non-fiction and historical books. Although I have Pillars of the Earth bookmarked some of the way through it.
I always find novels a bit of a trek to get through.
How is everybody doing with their challenge and what has been the greatest thing reading has taught you about yourself, or the world, this year?

hello keith!
i'm michele. i started reading in earnest this year after finding g.r. my challenge is 40 i think and i'm nearly there!
because of reading, i have discovered new ways to approach problems.
my vocab has increased.
i find i think about and refer to my books all the time.
books are making me a better person and more knowledgable.
i am choosing MAINLY books that have won literary prizes so i know they are good. some others i just like the authors or i like the series.
i have a collection of books, many hardcover, in good condition, i bought cheaply second-hand for a rainy day some years ago. well i was diagnosed with 'the dreaded' in 2015 so the rainy day is here.
i like contemporary and historical fiction so far. a little fantasy but not much. i read loads of art books because i am an artist.
happy reading keith. michele xx

Danni (little_miss_bookworm) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I’m Danni and I live in South Cumbria, just a short drive from the beautiful Lake District. I’ve been a member of Goodreads since December 2015 and love using the app to track my reading challenge! I love being able to track all the books I want to read; my list is so long that goodreads keeps me organised, haha!
I use the Goodreads app more than the website so I didn’t know how to join groups for a good while... I’ve invested some time in using the website instead and found there are so many groups I was spoilt for choice!
My favourite books are psychological thrillers, crime, mysteries, romance and contemporary fiction. I’ll read pretty much anything but I have to admit, I *do* tend to judge a book by its cover so if there’s something that catches my eye, it goes on the TBR list!
My reading challenge for this year was supposed to be a book a week but life gets in the way so I’m not completely on track. Now instead of reading a book a week, I’m sticking with 52 books for the year. I’ve just started my 44th so making good progress but this is the part of the year where it starts to get busy and I have less time to read!
Looking forward to catching up with other members and making some friends on here! Thank you for having me!

I am Veda a/k/a MoonChild63 I'm from the Mid-West (born & raised) served the country during peace-time, mother of two (beautiful/grown) daughters & GG (Gorgeous Grandma) of four (1 girl, 2 preemies - thriving now, though 1 has Autism) & Moose (not his real name) who is the attention seeker of the bunch, as well as a reader!

Love many genres, yet Lt. Eve Dallas is a character that I would put any book down for! Maria Snyder 'Study' & 'Glass' books, Agatha & all things Sherlock, history, politics of true "patriots" (that is) books, books & more 📚's

My favorite Twilight Zone episode is Burgess Meredith's 'Time Enough at Last,' but with stashed readers - as a 21st century ending 😘

I look forward to making friends, new reads & whatever else Goodreads & grp have to offer. Ciao for now, happy reading!

But I do find myself getting caught up with life, family en work. And when I read, I often grab the same authors or genres. I hope that by joining this group I can get out of my comfort zone and expand my horizon.

Thought I would drop by and introduce myself and see if anyone can recommend any good reads?

I have just finished “Ragdoll” by Daniel Cole and have just started “the innocent man” written by John Grisham (it was highly recommended to me)

message 645: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Tucker Hello everyone! Been around Goodreads for a while but just to use the catalog and reviews to find new and interesting books. I was born and raised in Seattle, WA. Though I have traveled a lot for work and vacations, I have never lived anywhere else.

I have been reading a lot of "postmodern mysteries" lately after reading The New York Trilogy in March and I have been having a lot of fun exploring that genre. I am currently finishing Noir and find it hilariously entertaining.

I always love a good thriller/mystery book and I have several series that I keep up to date on. Jonathan/Faye Kellerman, Mark Dawson, and JA Jance are some of my favorite authors when I am looking for something entertaining instead of something challenging.

My big goal this year is to read Infinite Jest over the fall/winter. If anyone is interested in a buddy read I would love some company. My wife is my usual recipient of thoughts and opinions on my current book and though she is lovingly tolerant I think she might get sick of feedback on 1000 pages.

Happy reading!

Shawnda M. | 6 comments Hi everyone my name is Shawnda, and I live in Indiana. I am a married mother of 3 children and 1 spoiled dog. I work as a librarian and my job is not going to lie the best job in the whole wide world especially if you love to read. I will read anything and everything seriously just give me something to read. I mostly I go by recommendations from friends and patrons, but I am not going to lie I check out a few books with covers I find appealing, and every once in awhile I find a diamond in the rough by accident. I also just started joining groups this year and have never completed my past reading challenges, so this year I am looking to exceed my goal and I am so close to doing it so I am excited. I also would love to add some buddy reads as I love to discuss books after I am done reading them so if anyone wants to team up with me I would love that.
My reading goal is 40 books this year which I am more than halfway finished as I am currently reading my 29th at this moment.

Yvette | 3 comments Hi all,

I'm Yvette and I live in Antwerp, Belgium. Like all of you, I love to read. I read almost anything I can get my hands on but have a preference for thrillers, historical fiction and fantasy.
Although my mother tongue is Dutch, I prefer reading in English and Spanish.
I've been on Goodreads for a couple of years but was looking to join some groups in order to get some recommendations and exchange views on all the great books which are out there.
When I saw Zappa's quote on "so many books ..." I just knew I had to join as at beginning of August I happened to change my profile photo to a picture with the same text. My 'to read' list is 2 thirds of my 'read' list in number and as I'm 52, I'm starting to panic :-)
My reading challenge 2018 is the same every year: 52, a book for every week.
