4 stars Toru falls in love with Naoko. She was his best friend's girlfriend. Kizuki's tragic death left a mark on both of them. After her twentieth birthday, Naoko retreats to a sanctuary to heal herself. Toru makes the journey to visit her and her roommate Reiko. While Naoko works to get better, Toru is befriended by Midori, who is completely different from Naoko. Toru falls in love with Midori, realizing he will never be with Naoko. This is beautifully written. It does have scenes which some may find upsetting. I really like Murakami's writing and I enjoyed this book.
