I do remember the author was female and, being set in Australia (I happened to be living there at the time), I assume she was Australian herself.

You're welcome. I was really starting to wonder why I couldn't find the right book--I mean, how many Australian sci-fi feminist dystopian novels from the 1980s can there be? After a while, I just personally wanted to know the answer. Had to search "Heartlands" on Goodreads, then scroll through the results looking for publication dates starting with '19'. ...Only took 'til page 16... *sigh* *shakes head* Sometimes I wonder about myself... But it's a great feeling to find something after a long time searching. Happy I could help.

I read this novel in the mid to late 1980s and so it's at least 30 years old.
It was set in Australia. Sometime in the future men and women now separately. Women lived in a very eco-friendly society on the east coast. Men lived in a very technological society on the west coast. The only time they interacted was once a year when a small contingent of each gender would meet to swap sperm and any newborn boys.
A young man and young woman decide to run off together away from their respective societies.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
TIA
