With this particular story, "we don't know for sure" is often going ton be the correct answer. Those of you who have read Ramona -- a very popular novel at the time this story happened -- may be interested to hear that some of the distortions in the story came from journalists who painted the kidnapped real-life girl into a Ramonalike character, to the point of creating fictional people who had nothing to do with the story and explaining that she was kidnapped or her father was killed because of those fictional people and interactions.
