Joy D | 1208 comments I finished this one recently and loved it.

My review:
When I was young, I devoured every book I could put my hands on, so it’s hard for me to believe I had not read this classic before now. Parts science fiction, fantasy, classic battle of good and evil, time-traveling via a fifth dimension, young people developing their talents, this mixture succeeds in engaging both the brain and the heart. The characters faced many challenges and had to find creative solutions. I don't think this is a spoiler, but I'll mark it just in case: (view spoiler) I can see why it is considered a children’s classic, but I think anyone could enjoy it.

Meaningful quote:
“There hasn’t been anybody, anybody in the world I could talk to. Sure, I can function on the same level as everybody else, I can hold myself down, but it isn’t me.”

Ketty (kettlekinsreads) I just finished this and it was okay for me.

I found the writing style to be a touch trying at first, but once I found her rhythm I was fine. It took me forever to get into the book, it was very slow, kinda of dull, and made me wonder what and why. Around chapter nine I got into it, then it slowed down and then it was over.

Over all, it was good, it was okay. I will probably read the rest of the series eventually but I am not going to be rushing to recommend it to anyone anytime soon and I probably won't force my kids to read it. Overall, it got my first real solid three-star rating. It was okay.

Pamela | 91 comments I recently finished this and I really enjoyed it. ( My rating - 5 Stars) I am really not one to write long reviews so I will just leave that to everyone else. The "Not Knowing" is the fun part about books to me, so I don't read a lot of reviews either.

Since I have been reading the last few years, I will have to say that I regret not reading as a child or young adult. I really missed out!! Working on making up for it though!!!

Happy Reading Everyone!!!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. Read this for the umpteenth time, but the first time as an adult. I remember the book being longer. Maybe there were just some big concepts in the book for me when I was a kid. I forgot how spiritual the book was - not religious but definitely spiritual. But the lovely writing was the same, as were the really smart characters. Definitely worth reading and can't wait to see the movie! 5 stars

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) For those of you who read this as a child, were there any particular scenes that stuck with you?

For me, I remembered most vividly the explanation of the "wrinkle" in space which allowed them to travel to other worlds. When I re-read the book I also remembered vividly the turkey dinner, which seems weird...

Ashley (ashleym99) | 1440 comments I was not a fan of this book. I thought it was slow and there was not much going on. I thought something would happen during the adventure, but was disappointed. Then I thought the ending was quick. I might have enjoyed this as a kid, but not today.

Cecil I really liked this at the start, but then it just kept getting progressively worse as it went on.

Holly | 79 comments I have to admit, this book wasn't my favorite...nor was it my worst book ever. I thought as a AYA book, it might be a bit hard to understand. I couldn't imagine reading it at 13 yrs old and understanding it. But as an adult, I found it a quick read. I had to reread some parts and slow down in others though. I wish it would have had a bit of adventure and something to hold my interest through the middle chapters.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Has anyone seen the movie? I'm curious how it compares to the book.

Raviteja (fraggerbot) | 354 comments I just finished this. The book started with an interesting note, but as it went through it felt boring. It felt to me that there is a lack of depth, and everything seemed too simple. Meg was occasionally irritating. The ending went really fast (or did they just tesser??) which was also another disappointment. This book might be for the kid me, and definitely not for the adult me now.

message 13: by SarahKat, Buddy Reads (new) - rated it 3 stars

SarahKat | 6223 comments I would give this a 2, but my son's vote counts for books we read together and he thought it was worthy of a 3. I believe it's only because the last 2 chapters were fairly interesting. The rest of the book was incredibly "meh." The book has a really sweet message about love and some really obvious Christian undertones. Both of which would be fine, wonderful even, if there had been a story as well. It felt a lot like a sci-fi The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Which, again, would be awesome if there had been more to the story.
Also, the writing style is really odd. Something I might have found really cool if I hadn't been reading it aloud to my kid. Not a good read-aloud book.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I liked it more as a kid when some of the ideas (like a "4th dimension") were pretty mind-blowing. As an adult I gave it 3 stars although I appreciated the opportunity to walk down memory lane, especially prior to the release of the movie.

It feels like the discussion is winding down as we near the end of the month but of course please feel free to continue to post your comments and insights. Thanks again to those of you who were able to join us in this group read!
