Ok, so girl goes to gas station after her car dies. After getting coffee and leaving, two red neck brothers pick her up. Shes trying to get to the west coast to check on her daughter that she had given up for adoption. Only those with family in other states are allowed to travel to said states. They get her daughter, then realize all the dead are coming back to life. They get trapped in the city (i think its san fran). I am pretty sure its a three book series, but maybe just two. Strong, realistic female character. I think later they try to make it to one of those rich ppl bunkers. Which ends up catching on fire. But they would have had to leave anyway since it was running out of food. OH! It catches fire because bad guys from a city which had kidnapped main fem chara wanted revenge for her escaping with other captives.
