50.1 Peebee’s Task: Summer of 1984

I remember the first time I ever played the original Trivial Pursuit, Genus Edition: while I was away at camp during the summer of 1984 (which according to Wikipedia is when the game's popularity peaked). These tasks are related to my memories from that unforgettable summer.

Read 3 books from at least 2 of the 3 options. You may select A and B from a single option. You may NOT do the same part A or B more than once.

Option 1: 1984

A. For this option, read (or hopefully re-read) the book 1984 by George Orwell,
OR
B. read a book first published in 1984.

Option 2: When Doves Cry

This song, from the movie soundtrack for Purple Rain, was #1 on the charts for most of the summer, as well as the biggest hit of the year.

A. For this option, read a book with a bird on the cover,
OR
B. read a book with the words "purple," "rain," "Prince," or "time" in the title, subtitle, or series title, EXACT matches only.

Option 3: Sixteen Candles

This movie, one of my very favorites, was the first movie John Hughes directed, and featured some of the actors who would later be known as part of the “Brat Pack.”

A. For this option, read a book with a cake and/or candle(s) on the cover. Cupcakes will NOT be considered cakes for this task,
OR
B. read a book WRITTEN by one of the actors who were considered part of the Brat Pack, according to this Wikipedia article: Brat Pack – Membership Any ACTOR mentioned in the Membership section may be used. Co-authors work like Along the Way: The Journey of a Father and Son, but a contribution of an Introduction or Foreward to another author's book does not work.

(Some of my favorite Brat Pack authors are: Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe)

Required for all options: Please state the options you selected when you post. If using cover options, please post a link to the book’s cover. If your choices aren’t obvious, please explain the connection.

Cupcakes as opposed to representations of full-sized cakes or slices of a full-sized cake.

3 books from the same option (the options are counted as what's before the OR and what's after the OR (now designated A and B)).

Illumination Night by Alice Hoffman (can't see candles)

Angelology (Angelology, #1) by Danielle Trussoni (an angel, not a bird)

Peebee | 481 comments JennRenee wrote: "I want to make sure that all three books read can be from the same option?"

I am counting the options as only two options listed for each one (what's before the OR and what's after). So you could have two from one and one from another, but not three from one.

For example, for Option 2, you couldn't have #1 with a bird, #2 with "purple," and #3 with "rain," but you could do #1 with a bird, #2 with "purple," and #3 a book published in 1984.

No on the cupcakes; yes on the full-sized cakes. The 2nd choice is approved.

Peebee | 481 comments Kathy G. wrote: "Can I read 3 books pub. in 1984?"

We are going to issue some clarifying language, but the answer is no to that. What I meant by using the same option is that you could choose one book from the first half of the sentence and another from the second half of the sentence in the same option...you didn't have to select one from Option 1, one from Option 2, and one from Option 3, but since it's led to some confusion we will be changing the language.

That is correct. You have Option 1A, Option 2A and Option 2B. That's how we are planning to relabel it to make it clear that you can't read 3 books with birds, 3 books published in 1984, or 3 books with prince, rain, and purple, since those are all the same suboption.

Anyone listed in the membership section of the Wikipedia page, since neither I nor the moderators want to quibble over whether someone truly belonged or not.

Dee, that's another reason....I know if you expand it there's Melissa Gilbert and Patrick Swayze (and may be others....those were just the ones I knew about). Co-authorship is fine, as long as one of the brat packers is listed.

Those all work together, exactly as I envisioned it. You have one from 2A (bird), one from 2B (time), and one from 3B (Rob Lowe). It's sometimes harder to get the language exactly clear in the task, but that's what the Help Thread is for!
