SOLVED. Sci-fi medic and shipmates get out with an elite Alien group

I know the book starts off as the medic tried to save an Alien boy even though she knows she will be court marshaled for touching him. Her commander goes missing and turnes out to be a Clone. Clones are used for spare parts and not considered people. They get caught by the bad guys and the medic has to save the alien commanders life by performing heart surgery. It's a two or three book series and ultimately there son/grandson time travels and goes through this with them.
