Ian Miller | 1857 comments Definitely not encouraging. There are some jobs where you really want integrity, and he doesn't look like he has much.

message 54: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I really want integrity from people doing any job. But, as Barbara said, greed and corruption are always going to exist. I just want the corrupt to pay for what they do in exact proportion to the suffering they cause others. Sadly, it's a given in the modern world that the people with money don't do a lot of suffering for their crimes.

Wall Street acted on an official government report a full minute before the report was released. They must have been leaked the information from an insider, therefore insider trading which is still a crime.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments A common tactic these days to shut up the opposition is to label them as racist. Math is racist, voting laws are racist, the pledge of allegiance is racist, statues of the founders of this country are racist, etc., etc.

message 70: by J. (new)

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 167 comments About 5 years ago, Philadelphia initiated a tax on soft drinks, which raised the price of a 2 liter bottle of soda by $1. The reality is, many of the soft drink consumers were low income families because it was relatively cheap - cheaper than milk, premium fruit juice or even many bottled waters. There was a huge backlash at the time, and many of the region's media outlets were reporting that people who lived in the area were now crossing the bridge into NJ to buy soda, and decided that while they were there, they may as well do the bulk of their grocery shopping, which impacted the Philly area's groceries, delis and convenience stores.

message 71: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments Interesting. We had the same situ with soft drinks 🍹-previous government raised taxes, the new one will likely cancel them. Apart from impacting shopping habits, have they actually caused reduction in their consumption?
It’s also similar to cigarettes, which are super expensive, while often a weaker population would be smoking 🚬 more. Wonder whether it’s the right approach

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments We'll see if greed and corruption are defeatable if Biden is held accountable by the mainstream media for his greed and corruption, his connection to China and Ukraine via his son Hunter. It's funny that Democrats tried and failed by devious means to connect Trump to Russia, while Biden has real ties to bad actors.

Culture Citizen | 30 comments Greed and corrpution have not always occured in humans, according to Graham Hancock:

''...if you go back to the Upper Neolithic, we find nearly no evidence of warfare, we find nearly no evidence of the greedy acquisition of material goods, rather living in harmony with Nature and living off the land but living as a community, as small communities...''

Yes, I hear this quasi nostalgic sentiment from others too. As romantic and tranquil as it sounds the transition to this ideality won't be possible in terms of acute inequality and large number of violently bent individuals and "tribes"

message 79: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments I rather fancy that the tranquility of the upper neolithic was illusory. We have no evidence of warfare, but that is because we have very little evidence. If we go back to Neanderthal times we had small widely separated groups who would rarely see each other. There is evidence that the Homo Erectus lived in small groups and every now and again, maybe annually, would come together for "meet and greet", trade, and romance - to ensure there was a wider gene pool. If you are going to live like that with a very low population density there won't be warfare because you don't see anyone outside your immediate group.

Nevertheless, we do not see Homo Erectus or Neanderthals now. There is a very good chance they were wiped out by our species, so let us not get too enamoured of the utopian life back then. If it was like the Maori in NZ prior to European settlement, life would have been short and often brutal.

Culture Citizen | 30 comments I think ya all have such cynicism ya don wanna think it so. And you seem to put stock in mainstream research. But Gobekli Tepe, the flood lines around the Sphinx (and the structures underneath), and the Ark they found in 1985 (story with footage on 60 Minutes that year), having forged steel bits, each occuring over ten-thousand years ago, show the sham of the mainstream.

Then, you might say, 'Well, see, mainstream researchers having such bias confirms our conclusions!'

It all shows how humans don't do well with Transaction. And hence, Transaction will go away.

message 81: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments I don't see how the existence of Gobekli Tepe and flood lines around the Sphinx show any sham. I have heard about both for quite some time. However, I really doubt anything made of forged steel bits occurred 10,000 years ago. Steel is difficult to make, and I am unaware of any evidence even for iron preceded the Hyksos.

Deb M | 2 comments Have to give a really strong recommendation on this historical memoir, “Wind of Change: an American Journey in Post Soviet Russia.” Set in the early 1990’s, shortly after the USSR collapsed, the author describes his travels in Russia trying to do business and find investments. It’s the Wild West, with free wheeling managers, leaders who cannot conceive of a market economy, and exKGB trying to get ahead. Anything goes, and this one young American is hopeful for positive change. His journey reminds us of the short spark of hope that existed for just an instant in time. 5/5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Apparently his pictures sell for $500k according to Twitter hate thread. Not sure his jet lives up to ex-President's Trump 1 - wonder what that costs to rent... Still all good for the climate. Misleading headline as flight was given by friend of family. The jet is worth $6m maybe. Cost of flight was around $60k although you can get an on-line quote for cheaper...

Hunter is a wannabe and a disgrace, but how about someone who is actually important and part of government. I know we got used to Trump's children and spouses in the white House but as far as I know Biden's son plays no part except creating embarrassment - Let's take a moment to look at Supreme Court Judge Thomas.
