Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) Welcome athletes, one and all! August 1st marks the start of our very first Reading Olympics, which will hopefully become an annual occurrence. However, in order to make these Games successful, we will be relying heavily upon member participation, particularly participation of our athletes. If you are interested in becoming an athlete, by all means, read on!

Please Note: If you wish to directly compete in the Games, you must sign up as an athlete and read the information below.

During the course of the Games, athletes will be competing in a wide range of sports in an attempt to bring home the gold medal for the country they are representing. Athletes have the ability to choose what country or fictional location they would like to represent in the games, as long as there are at least 5 athletes competing for that country.

After your country/fictional location has acquired 5+ members, a secret Goodreads group will be created solely for your team. This group will serve as a location for you to converse with one another, devise strategies, and collaborate throughout the Games (many sports involve team-oriented activities, so communication in this secret group is crucial). Each country will bring members together and hopefully create lasting friendships.

Each sport is scheduled to begin on a specific date (to see the full schedule, click here. On the start date of each sport, a fictional character, who will serve as the referee for the duration of the sport, will post the instructions for that particular challenge. For each sport, a gold, silver, and bronze medal will be awarded, either to specific individuals or to entire countries/locations. Many of these rankings are time sensitive, so be sure to check this group regularly!

We hope to establish the 2014 Reading Olympics as a fun, engaging activity that promotes reading and interaction with fellow readers. Without all of you, however, that wouldn't be possible and we would fall short of our goal. Therefore, please consider signing up to become an athlete. After all, you could win eternal glory, if you only give it a chance!

In order to sign up to participate in the games and select the country you would like to represent, please visit our Athlete Registration thread for further details. Any member who wishes to take part in and directly participate in the Games must fill out the Athlete Registration form.

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) That's fine, there is no set amount of time that you need to set aside or dedicate to the tournament. You can participate at your leisure!
