Let's talk about Rill. How would you describe Rill as she struggles through the abduction, the orphanage, and her decision to return to her adoptive family? Did you admire her? What changes did you see in her as a result of the experience? How is she different when she gets to the Sevier’s house?

I loved Rill. She was my hero. She tried so damn hard to keep it together for her siblinds. She was what, 10? She did a damn good job considering her age and the situation. And she was so smart. Her decision to return to her adoptive family was out of necessity, but she made the right choice for her sister, gave her the best chance she could.

I almost feel like a part of her "Rill" was closed off or lost once she went through this. As May, she seemed harder, colder. Her way of self-preservation. A way to deal with her heart break and tragedy, but also a way to move forward.

Jessica | 9 comments I feel like Rill carried so much burden for such a young girl. She truly pulled at my heart and throughout the book you learned just how tough she had to be just to survive. She tried with all her might to keep her brother and sisters together and you know she took to heart when her father told her to take care of the kids. My heart ached for her. In the end it was just so sad - she had basically outlived all her siblings and even with Judy - she was 12 years older than her and still taking care of her at Magnolia Manor. It almost seemed like she was still trying to keep her family together with both hands. In my mind, she honestly did not pass until after Judy because she had to look after her siblings.
