The Immortalists

Read any good books lately? Tell us about them here or post to the group’s bookshelf.

I finished “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin on audio. It was a great performance by the reader and an interesting story of four siblings, their mother and the power of superstition and family.

I cannot wait to read it. I am on hold for that book. I am working my way through Alice Hoffman's 'The Rules of Magic,' and really enjoying it. A tale of a family of witches that believed they are cursed if they fall in love. It is a curse that has been handed down the generations. I am looking forward to finishing it today.

There’s magic and magicians in The Immortalists too! I haven’t read any of the books in Hoffman’s Magic series but am just getting into The Ice Queen by her which has a librarian protagonist and is an idea for anyone wanting to enter the February is Library Lovers Month mini-challenge.

Just finished "The Power" by Naomi Alderman. It was so-so. Not a recommendation, unfortunately.

Now I am listening to "Her Body and Other Parties" by Carmen Maria Machado and am 3 stories into it, and so far am enjoying it! A problem I have with short stories is that I get really into them, and then they end abruptly. This is a little bit of a problem for me especially with audiobooks because I feel wrenched out of the story and don't see it coming. At least with a paper copy I can glance ahead and see how much more I can expect. But, forgiving that, these have been strong (and slightly naughty!) lunch break listens, and I do recommend it.

I had thought about picking up that one but, after reading your and a few other reviews, will probably skip it ....
