I am looking for the title of a science fiction anthology I read over 20 years ago. All I can remember from it is one story.
The plot involves a 'robot' landing on a Pacific island in the distant past and becoming worshiped by the natives as a god.
Flash forward to the present and after various things happen (Mostly during WWII) the 'god' is bombarded by the main guns of a US Navy Destroyer(?), this provides the final impetus to complete its programming.
The resulting explosion kicks the Earth out of it's orbit and into the Sun.
I read it in high-school, and as with most good stories all I can remember is the plot.
