It is time to start nominations for our group reads for spring, 2018.

What would you like to read for discussion? I am opening this up to anything , so feel free to nominate any book you would like, new releases, older releases, old classics, popular books, thought provoking books, non-fiction books, etc.

We will read the top vote receivers, whatever they may be!

If you nominate a book, please be willing and available to lead the discussion if the book is selected.

Have heard great things about this author and this book.Desperation Road

message 3: by Leslie (new)

Leslie This has been on my to read shelf for awhile. The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco

message 4: by Petra (new)

Petra The Name of the Rose is really good. It's a densely written mystery and so very, very good.

message 5: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments I agree. I read it a couple of years ago.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) The movie is very good.

message 7: by Petra (new)

Petra I haven't seen the movie. Hmm....that would be good. I'll have to look for it. Hope it's on Netflix.

If you live in the US, it is not available on netflix. I just checked.

Juliette | 40 comments I have not heard of the book The Name of the Rose, but I have just read the synopsis on Goodreads and it sounds awesome! Definitely would like to read that.

Another book that I would be interested in reading would be The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

message 10: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I haven't seen The Name of the Rose movie yet, but cried my way through The Red Tent.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) The Red Tent is great. I have read the book and seen the movie.

message 12: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments Also read the Red Tent, too much explicit sex for my taste and too much licence with the original biblical story line. But, I think I am the only person who I have encountered who did not love it, so I am the odd one out.

message 13: by Petra (new)

Petra Irene, I didn't much like it either.

message 14: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments Ah, so I am not as alone as I thought.

Yes. I'm into this suggestion.

Our winners are Desperation Road, leader Irene, and The Name of the Rose, leader Leslie.

The vote was a tie, so do either of you ladies have a preference for who would like to go first?

Irene | 4585 comments When would this start?

message 22: by Leslie (last edited Mar 04, 2018 02:43PM) (new)

Leslie Wow it won! Spring is a big word. I don't mind going first or second. Just let me know when I'm up. :-) I'm excited. It's supposed to be a terrific book. I'm thinking five weeks for mine.

We can start one book April 1st or mid April, and then follow with the other whenever the first is complete.

message 24: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments Leslie, If you are good with going first, would you take April? My April is pretty full.

message 25: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Leslie, are you willing to start our discussion of The Name of the Rose sometime in April?

message 26: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Mine is getting crazy too, but I can start in April. Would mid April be okay? If not, I can try the first.

message 27: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Mid April is fine, Leslie. Yours is a longer book so we can take more than a month to read it. :-) I will start a thread for you to put a reading and discussion schedule up when you get one figured out.

message 28: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Oh thank you. I was going to ask if you wouldn't mind doing that.

Hi Irene, I looks like we will not be reading The Name of The Rose, so you can let us know when you would like to start the read and discussion of Desperation Road. I will leave it up to you, you are free to start anytime, now, next month, whenever you would like! :-)

message 30: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments OK, let me look at a copy of the book and see about a schedule. Sorry the Name of the Rose discussion did not materialize. It is a great book and I was looking forward to reading everyone's comments.

message 31: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments OK, took a look at the book. It is not very long. How much time do people need to get the book? Would people be ready to start discussing the first 1/3rd on May 1 or would people rather start reading on May 1?

message 32: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
Hello everyone. Sorry, but I really do not feel like putting up with the attitude that Leslie was having in her posts today, so I have deleted her from the group. I hope that I have not offended anyone by doing this, but I prefer this group to be a happy, fun, casual place to have non stressful discussions of books.

Irene, we will proceed with Desperation Road as our next read. May first, or the first 1/3rd of May would both work, so which ever works best for you I am game! Looking forward to a wonderful discussion!

message 33: by Irene (new)

Irene | 4585 comments OK, I am fine either way. Can everyone get the book in time if we use the following schedule? If not, say something and we can push it out another week.

In April - Read Ch 1-17
May 1-7 - Discuss Ch 1-17 & Read Ch 18-34
May 8-14 - Discuss Ch 17-34 & Read Ch 35-51
May 15 - Discuss entire book

This gives us a bit less than 100 pages a week.

Sheila, will you get the thread started when it is time?

message 34: by Sheila , Supporting Chick (new)

Sheila | 3485 comments Mod
I set up a new thread for you Irene.

I have my copy ready so am able to start any time. If there is anyone that needs more time though to round up a copy I am happy to wait and Irene can push her schedule back.
