Kaje Harper | 17393 comments Our Feb-March Book of the month will be At the Edge of the Universe At the Edge of the Universe by Shaun David Hutchinson by Shaun David Hutchinson

Tommy and Ozzie have been best friends since second grade, and boyfriends since eighth. They spent countless days dreaming of escaping their small town—and then Tommy vanished.

More accurately, he ceased to exist, erased from the minds and memories of everyone who knew him. Everyone except Ozzie.

Ozzie doesn’t know how to navigate life without Tommy, and soon suspects that something else is going on: that the universe is shrinking.

When Ozzie is paired up with new student Calvin on a physics project, he begins to wonder if Calvin could somehow be involved. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is for him to deny the feelings developing between them, even if he still loves Tommy.

But Ozzie knows there isn’t much time left to find Tommy–that once the door closes, it can’t be opened again. And he’s determined to keep it open as long as possible.

This thread is for discussion of this book - there is no specific reading schedule and you may post at any time. There may be spoilers in the comments, so be aware if you have not yet finished. Especially if you are posting early in the two months, please try to put real plot spoilers into a spoiler-hiding tag - write <*spoiler> before the text and <*/spoiler> at the end of it - with both * removed to make it work, and it will be hidden, revealed only (view spoiler)

I look forward to seeing what the group thinks of this one.

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments Thanks for posting - nice to hear good things about it. Some reviewers added a bunch of trigger warnings on it - do you think it's a darker book to read or not?

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments I really enjoyed this one - on the edge of possible alternate-universe, with memorable characters including a genderfluid best friend. An engaging and fascinating read, and an MC I empathized with.

It isn't really dark, despite the appropriate content warnings, but it does address some darker themes and the tone is somber or maybe anxious, as events cascade that are more negative than positive, despite some good moments. The ending is hopeful, although not exactly the one I'd hoped for.

My review 4.5* - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Iamshadow | 334 comments This one was okay, but it was just kind of missing something, for me. I kept waiting for some kind of unveiling or twist, and it just never came. Maybe I wanted it to be smarter than it was. Instead, it just left me unsatisfied.

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments The ending wasn't what I hoped for either, but I kind of liked being wrong about all the twists I'd speculated about. But yeah, the way it wrapped up was simpler than it might have been.
