Nik Krasno | 19850 comments We already have many successful examples of bionics being augmented or substituted by mechanics in the form prosthesis or otherwise. Once we have brain's operation figured out, can its circuit be integrated with external devices, so we'll have cellular units, instant messaging, external memory and everything else inbuilt or connected wirelessly or through USB?

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments I don't see why not, but I'm no expert. I'm reminded of the Borg on Star Trek, all connected and functioning as one. Very scary.

Graeme Rodaughan It's already happening. Google "Brain Machine Interface"

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments May well be that similar to today's vaccination newborns will be assigned communication number and implant

Graeme Rodaughan Whatever aids 'ease of use.'

Convenience is a primary driving factor for adoption of tech.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8071 comments Yep, I started using a computer way long ago, and against my better judgment, when I found that I could type tests and correct errors with a backstroke instead of using white-out.

Now, when I have a question about anything, I don't have to spend hours in the library like I used to do . . . I just Google it. Which is wonderful. I'd know so much more if I'd been able to do this all my life.

But I'm not up for implants at birth.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments I have used these in my SF too, so yes, I have to say it is possible. However, it could not be done at birth. The problem is the brain grows and initially it has very few connections. I think you would have to wait until you are sufficiently old. Also, I stick with what I wrote about my aliens who did this - you can only do it once, and what you do will have a limited function. The more you want to interface (i.e. the more you want it to do) the more severe the process of putting it in.

In my SF implants are given at birth these are nano-bot injections mostly for health and welfare. The later injections for teenage and then professional life add direct communications capabilities
