So this is a fairly older book, I remember reading it more than 10 - 15 years ago and even then it wasn't brand new.

Spoilers:

The story as I remember it starts with a being that lives in the ocean as a shark or something and one day reaches the shore. On the shore where it finds a dead human or it kills a human. It analyses the human and takes it shape, learning how to mold its body down to the finest detail of the human. This being can overall change into many other shapes, not just humans. It experiments with changing into a dog at some point by first killing the family dog.

While this being learns to behave like a human over time the story also follows a similar being in New York I believe. But the second being can only change human forms. It works its way into Wall Street to make money.

The first being learns of a mysterious object being found at the bottom of the ocean and tries to infiltrate the project studying it. It tries to romance the lead scientist in order to reach its goal.

At the end of the book, the two beings finally confront one another and battle it out.

That's about all I know about the book and it is driving me mad that I can't remember the name or how to find it. Google is of no help at all. So if anything that I wrote sounds familiar and you guys know the book, please help!!
