SOLVED: Fantasy: Book with a cleric that must team up with a dark wizard on a quest

I remember a few specifics about this book. I read it in the late 90s and I believe my sister received it from the SciFi and Fantasy Book club.
I remember that the cleric (some sort of holy warrior) carried a crossbow. At some point he was forced to go on a quest with a dark sorcerer where they had to cross the sea in a sailing ship. The dark sorcerer had a magic sword that he was able to store magic in and he had to exhaust much of the stored energy to save the ship from a bad thunderstorm. Once they were back on land he jammed the sword into the ground for it to recharge.
I recall that the sorcerer had gained his powers from sacrificing his wife and kids to the devil or a demon, since he had to give up something he loved a great deal to get the kind of power he was coveting.
I have been trying to recall this one for years as I think I was unable to finish it before i had to return it to my sister. I can't recall what the quest itself was either, but i think there may have been more companions, but I am unsure.

My sister found it! It was the Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman.
