Vikram Kapoor Bollywood has been very much a part & parcel of my life like any other Indian. Watching hindi movies on weekends and reading about Bollywood personalities in film magazines has been a regular activity over the years. However, I had never read a book on it. Happened to read Decoding Bollywood by Sonia Golani and I would say it’s definitely worth reading. While film magazines are popular for juicy stories, gossip and glossy pictures, this book provides complete perspective of how Bollywood works, what goes into making super hit films, what influences the kind of films we make, why we don’t win Oscars, what are the unwritten rules of Bollywood etc. The best part is that the book follows a simple free flowing style in the form of conversations with leading directors which brings out their own journeys, views, struggle days, successes, failures, challenges and resolves to entertain through blockbuster films. This book may interest regular book readers, film lovers and people who aspire to make career in film industry especially those who don’t come from filmy families & have no film background at all. Overall, I will say an interesting read. Earlier, I had read Sonia’s book My Life, My Rules which also was interesting.
