message 80: by John (new)

John | 618 comments Sorry for this question, but I am new. I noticed that we have a variety of books on the shelf but Neil Gaiman has authored 3 of them. Of the list of popular modern authors are his books a step above?

message 81: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi, John!

I had a look there and found Neverwhere and American Gods. But two or three, that's the same. Gaiman is a very popular author - and certainly a good one. Popular writers or books tend to get a lot of votes, be chosen and read here in the group.

That reflects a lot of things, including being good, or even above average. But being much read also reflects marketing, what the industry is promoting, hype of the moment, etc. Some best sellers disappear in time, others keep being read for centuries.

So I think frequency in our choices here are more an indication of reading preferences of a certain group and of a certain moment. Even the members / voters change.

So, I wouldn't take for granted that anyone's books, not specifically Neil Gaiman's, are above others just for being popular in a list.

message 82: by John (new)

John | 618 comments Thanks Marcos. Looks like he is credited on Good Omens also. There are probably over 20 or so uber chic modern writers out there with some good offerings so I was just curious as to why he came up so frequently. I think Stephen King was the only other with more than one. I don't care either way, was just curious. :)

message 84: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Because I missed that one, you can see I'm no Neil Gaiman expert. :-)

For some readers, Gaiman is regarded almost as a god. I'd be a heretic, in that case. :-)

But not so much for the average reader. I've read "The Ocean at the End of the Lake" and some other minor books, and some of his graphic novels as well, and I liked them.

message 85: by Marcos (last edited Feb 27, 2018 12:15PM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments See? Just another Gaiman supporter. Hey, Rowen, don't wish me bad because of what I just said! :-)

And I just had another look there, I might like it, actually.

Rowen | 47 comments Marcos wrote: "See? Just another Gaiman supporter. Hey, Rowen, don't wish me bad because of what I just said! :-)

Actually, I might be the heretic. I haven't read any books by Neil Gaiman, yet, but Good Omen and Neverwhere look like they might be good starting points. :-)

message 91: by Kim (new)

Kim WV | 168 comments I’d like to nominate one I’ve not seen mentioned: Howard’s End by EM Forster.
I’m new to nominating: does this go in this category or Classics? Thanks.

Stephanie Gwaltney | 94 comments Kim wrote: "I’d like to nominate one I’ve not seen mentioned: Howard’s End by EM Forster.

That would go over in the classics as the group has not read it before and it was written before 1970 : https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You might want to wait for a new nomination period as there is very little time left for anyone to second a nomination now.

message 93: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Hi, Kim!

Howards End hasn't been read by the group, so it can't be nominated in this thread, only for rereading of books already read - hence, "Bookshalf Catch-Up". :-)

Then, it was published in 1910, so it is eligible for nomination in the Classics (1969 and before, here in the group) thread.

Have a look at the header of each thread, it is explained there.

Also, it is advisable for new members to read "General Questions / FAQ" and "BOTM Suggestions FAQ". Many basic doubts are answered there.

Anyway, fell free to ask anytime! :-)
