I have been meaning to read this but other books keep getting in the way so I am glad to have this as the botm. It will defs be a good and eye opening read
I'm currently a fourth into the book, I started it early because I just could not wait! Its been put back on the bestsellers list again, probably because its being made into a movie.
I started this novel just yesterday and it is a total page turner. I am really getting addicted to this book. Happy that this won the pool.
Jennifer wrote: "Looking forward to and dreading reading this in equal measure."The way the book was orignally described to me made me think I would not like it. But the flow and tone makes it easy to gt into. It was not the intimidating, preachy read I thought it would be.
The MC is kind of snarky which adds humor.
So, I actually bought the book at B&N a month beforehand because I just KNEW it would win. The first B&N I went to had sold out, but I managed to snag a copy at the second. So I had no need to check the library status, but I decided to anyways.
Here's the hold status on Libby for Overdrive.
at least 6 month wait for
8 ebook copies
16 people per copy
124 people in total.
And this number is only for ebooks, not audiobooks or physical books. Crazy, right?
That’s awesome (and frustrating, I’m sure if you’re at the end of the list!). It’s so easy for us to get stuck in our bubbles and read things that only relevant to us. I’m glad this is gaining a wider audience. And if folks want to keep reading, I’ve heard good things about Dear Martin, which has a similar theme. I haven’t read it yet, but I think it’s the book of the month for the Diversity in All Forms group.

I found the same thing when I checked the librarys around me! Luckily, I also have membership to a really small library which has one copy that is currently checked out, but I am first in line for holds. Phew. So I won't be able to start this one until later on in the month, but I am looking forward to it!
This book must be good. There are many groups that have picked it for there BOTM. I am on a wait list at the library

Even if you only get to read the book by the end of the month, its a quick read. I haven't finished it because I get carried away with other stuff, but when I do sit down to read I'm always sucked right in.
Plus, ya know, YA font is large!

I've heard wonderful things about Dear Martin too, and am looking forward to it! It also deals with the other side, the pressure and instigation to join gangs and to act out.
I've read both Dear Martin and The Hate U Give in my classroom. I'd comment about it to my students and give them little promos for it. My students are now literally arguing over who gets to read them next. My students are all read ing below grade level, but will fight over both of these books!

Wow! I feel very lucky, then. I'm #10 on 2 copies for my library's Overdrive copy of the audio book. Fortunately/unfortunately I live in an area where there is likely less interest in this book, although I suspect it's relevant anywhere there are people. I'm looking forward to reading it.

Yes, I think your right. The ethnic population has allot to do with these statistics. In Phoenix, AZ, although the population is largely White, followed by Hispanic, 6.8% percent of the population is black, making it the third biggest ethnicity. It might seem like a small number, but that's apprx 99,600 people. And since there aren't any racial gang wars or exclusive neighborhoods in phoenix, the teenage hispanic generation is more likely to pick up a book with a black protagonist than say... some areas of california.
Yeah! I can finally start this story. Just received notice from my library that I can borrow the audio version. Looking forward to it.
I started listening to the audiobook 2 days ago! I really like it, you can't really say "page turner" for an audiobook but yeah, that's what it is :) Anyways, the speaker of the audiobook is really great too!
I have seen everyone mention this book - i have fairly high expectations of it. I've put a reservation in at my library and i'm excited!

I was FINALLY able to download a copy of this on Overdrive. I started listening to it yesterday afternoon and am totally hooked. I would have loved to listen to it straight through, but had to get some sleep. If it is as good as I expect, I may have to listen to Dear Martin, as well.
I've been appalled by the news of police violence in the States, but I live in a different environment and didn't feel it so deep and harsh. Yes, of course there's racism in my country, and the worse kind, everyone denies being one but deep down there's always a "but" or a comment or an unfortunate phrase. I don't know if an eye opener, just a different perspective on a matter of race and how some people would go to extremes to make you feel inadequate.

I've heard so much about this book but have never picked it up. This month is a bit crazy, don't know if I'll manage to join right now.
Very excited this group is rereading this, I thought it was great! Curious to hear what you all think
I finished The Invisible Man, so I'm gonna get started on this one tonight. I've been meaning to read it for ages. Thank you EHRTBM for giving me the push I needed to pick it up. The spoiler thread looks like it's blowing up, I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone is talking about once I've finished.
