Although I did not vote for this I will be joining in with the group read as I had been planning on rereading this before going on to A Legacy of Spies

I am planning to re-read the first two Smiley books first. If anyone else is interested, let me know and I will be happy to open a discussion thread. They are: Call for the Dead and A Murder of Quality.

Bronwyn (nzfriend) | 395 comments I didn't realize it was part of a series. Thanks for the heads up! I've put a hold on the first and should be able to get through the other two before the discussion for the third.

The books are indeed part of a series however there is no need to have read the first two before reading The Spy Who Came In from the Cold. Each book works as a stand alone.

The only George Smiley exceptions are the three books which make up the Karla trilogy: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy / The Honourable Schoolboy / Smiley's People

I know you don't have to read the first two, but I would like to go back to the beginning and read all the Smiley books. As I am going to read the third, I would like to start at the beginning. It might be worth pointing out that the second book, A Murder of Quality, is more of a crime novel, than a spy book.

Michael (mikeynick) | 332 comments Another one of my less recent holiday reads, yes although each novel stands alone, my intention is to read them in order.

I have just started re-reading (or rather listening) to the first Smiley book, Michael. I have never read the whole series, so am looking forward to it.

Val | 1707 comments I have found a book about the '60s I want to read, Les Années d'utopie, a memoir by Jean-Claude Carrière with the tag-line 'New York-Paris-Prague-New York, flowers, cobbles and tanks'.
I will let you know what I think when I get to it.

That's a wonderful tag-line Val

'New York-Paris-Prague-New York, flowers, cobbles and tanks'

I look forward to your reaction
