You called me in Dallas in 1978 when as a maitre de conferences at the University of Auvergne School of law I was attending the Academy of American and International law in Richardson, Texas, to tell me that Mrs Le Thanh Trai, an attorney from Hue, had possibly found death when the plane on which she escaped crashed.
Later I discovered Stringer which interested me enormously without realizing you were its author. Only today did I check and learn, to my great surprise, that you are also the author of numerous other works and received or nearly receives prestigious awards.
Springer alone made a tremendous impression on me while I was indeed younger and I am afraid my position about Vietnem has somewhat shifted. I am quite certain is has been first and foremost among the very few outstanding books I've read in any language abou Vietnam.
I hope I made no mistake about the identity of my Dallas caller.
By the way, you may have known that Mrs. Le Thanh Trai and her family successfully fled Vietnam and she had been an outstanding professor of law at the University of Notre Dame for many years.
One last request from me. Please forgive me if you were not the gentleman ho called me. This would in no way affect the long standing admiration I have been nurturing for the author of unforgettable Stringer.
