suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments My Mum used to adore Doris Day. She dared to take a day off Work once, calling in as being sick, just so that she could spend an afternoon at a matinee performance of a Doris Day Film.

She bumped into her Boss just as she was leaving! - both of them smiled at each other and when she went back to Work the next day nothing was ever said about it ;o>

Real name was Tarder Sauce (!), she was born with dwarfism, she had a under bite that gave her that distinctive scowling look.....but apparently she was a sweetie in real life.

RIP Grumpy Cat.

Val H. | 22208 comments Farewell Robert James Lee (Bob) Hawke, Australia's longest serving Labor Prime Minister (1983-1991). Trade unionist, Rhodes scholar, a larrikin and knockabout, but always a man of the people and blessed with the gift of gaining consensus from both sides of politics. He was once named in the Guinness Book of Records for skolling a yard glass of ale in then record time (11 seconds) during his Oxford days but became a tee-totaller when elected to Parliament. Anecdotes about Hawkey abound. We all saw him on TV the day Australia won the America's Cup (1983) and he said "Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum!". He was sports mad. He was a cricket tragic. He swore. He was never afraid to party. But he never lost the common touch and would talk to anyone. As one tribute said: "He never thought he was superior to the people; he was just in a superior job." I loved the story of when his horse won the Golden Slipper in 2001, he shouted drinks for the whole crowd (some 30,000) - free drinks for all for the next hour! But there was a serious side - his Government created Medicare, brokered the Prices and Incomes Accord, floated the Australian dollar, deregulated the financial sector, introduced the Family Assistance Scheme, brought in superannuation pension schemes for all workers and fought tirelessly against apartheid in South Africa. I doubt we'll see his like again any time soon.

Quite a week for Aussie politics. I don't really understand much of what goes on, especially at the minute, but I do recall Bob Hawke as a huge personality and it sounds like he was a good guy as well. It was funny to read on another thread when you wrote about avoiding the crowds on election day - the result of compulsory voting and never a problem here. What's your take on it Val?

Not all of his restuarts are affected Techy..his Fifteen Cornwall, which operates under a different franchise, and his international restuarants, trading as Jamie's Italian, Jamie's Pizzeria and Jamie's Deli, are uneffected.

I think the result reflects what a big country Australia is and local issues were front and centre. I wasn't surprised that the Coalition (Liberal/National) won, but, equally, I wouldn't have been surprised if Labor had won. The polls had Labor ahead but the leader, Bill Shorten, is a bit on the nose with the electorate (I don't mind him; he has now stood down and I'm not too sure of the two leading contenders). Climate change should have been the major issue. Shorten was equivocal on the proposed Adani coal mine. If he was thought to be against it, it would have cost him votes in Queensland. If he was thought to support it, it would have cost him votes from conservationists/renewable energy supporters. It will bring many jobs to Queensland but it will also have major pollution concerns for the Great Barrier Reef, besides being outdated technology.
https://adanifiles.com.au/

Queensland was Labor's undoing. If there is a right-wing, conservative, Christian stronghold in Australia, call it Queensland. I think they're a bit like Texans - don't like to be told what to do, think they're still an independent nation. Another factor may have been young voters. I overheard this theory on the train yesterday. When we had the "voluntary postal survey" on same-sex marriage last year, many young people felt strongly about the issue and rushed to enroll to vote. Did they feel the same interest when it came to the national election? Our voting (preferential) is quite complicated. In my seat, there were 6 candidates for the House of Representatives - you have to vote 1 to 6 in the order of your preference. In the Upper House, there were 82 candidates for the state of Victoria. (if I lived in new South Wales, I'd have been faced with 104!). The ballot paper is about the size of an unwound toilet roll. You can fill in every box if you want to, but the easier option is to place 6 votes above the line (for the party rather than the individuals) or a minimum of 12 below the line (all 82 nominations). I got to 16 and then gave up because there's more chance of making a mistake. But you can see how it would be very intimidating for a first time voter and very easy to err. I know one young friend who always puts in a donkey vote because he feels he doesn't know the issues.

But if I were to summarise, I'd say, just like many countries in the world, the electorate chose self-interest over the good of the many. "I don't want to pay more taxes and the sick, the poor, the unemployed, the old, etc. just need to pick themselves up!"

Thanks for that thorough and well thought out reply Val. I'm a bit clearer now (I think!). The voting system sounds like a nightmare - I can't imagine the response of the average Brit voter faced with such a ballot paper.

The middle name thing isn't unusual: James Harold Wilson, Leonard James Callaghan and James Gordon Brown all used their middle names. Others have routinely been referred to in the press by their forenames: Maggie, Jim (Callaghan), Ted (Heath), etc.

Certainly no Prime Minister with her backbone, which is what's been lacking during the Brexit negotiations/capitulation.

Michael Gove on announcing his bid for leadership said that he will unite the Tory Party, take us out of the EU and be ready to lead the country. I was half expecting him to whip out a fez and add "Just like that!" with a Tommy Cooper impression. What else Mikey? Walking on water whilst curing the lepers and feeding the multitude with two tins of beans and a Pot Noodle from the local foodbank?
