The Gone But Not Forgotten RIP Thread
Farewell Aussie legend Broderick Smith, original member of iconic boogie blues outfit Carson, but probably best known for his time with The Dingoes. Was he really 75? "an absolute giant in the pantheon of Australian Music, someone who achieved & created so much great music but remained quite the enigma, never that interested (seemingly) in fame....but his talent & music & legacy lives on."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irehi...
"Smith had an extensive career playing blues, boogie, country and rock music in Australia and abroad.
A statement posted to his website said the singer-songwriter died peacefully at home on April 30.
"Hope you finally find the holy grail of harmonica tones wherever you are," said his son, Ambrose Kenny-Smith of band King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard."

A shock announcement today of the death of chef Jock Zonfrillo, aged 46. I don't know if anyone (except for the much-missed Lez) watched the Australian Masterchef but he was one of the hosts/judges in the last three years. He trained under Marco Pierre White and ran one of Australia's finest restaurants (in Adelaide). The latest season (already completed) of Masterchef was due to start tonight but has been postponed indefinitely.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-05-0...
Wee Willie Harris passed away on April 27th aged 90. Most people nowadays probably only know him from the namecheck in Ian Dury's 'Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3' but back in the late 50s/early 60s the diminutive Harris (who was only 5'2") was a legend for his live performances, but, like other 60s live legends including Geno Washington and the Alex Harvey Soul Band couldn't seem to sell any records beyond his core crowd. RIP.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPj93...

One of my first singles was If You Could Read My Mind - still a favourite. His Canadian Railroad Trilogy should be the Canadian National Anthem. Wonderful songwriter and singer. First Cohen, now Lightfoot - thankfully Joni still hanging on in there.

Picking out the toons for the Bacharach theme reminded me that another great songwriter has recently died.Cynthia Weil, aged 82, who wrote with her husband Barry Mann such standards as 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling', 'On Broadway', 'Walking In The Rain', 'We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place', and 'I Just Can't Help Believing'.

The Mighty Berlusconi.RIP Big Man.
Anyone who can call Angela Merkel an Un****able Lard Arse, is born of greatness.
I was sad to hear of the death of actor Treat Williams. He snared me with his performance in A Prince of The City (1981) and I was also a fan of the TV series Everwood. I immediately thought of Roger McGough's poem:Let me die a youngman's death
not a clean and inbetween
the sheets holywater death
not a famous-last-words
peaceful out of breath death
When I'm 73
and in constant good tumour
may I be mown down at dawn
by a bright red sports car
on my way home
from an allnight party
A motorbike accident at the age of 71 may be as good a way as any.

Alan Arkin departed this life on June 29th aged 89. I shall always remember him in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter.

He had previously directed a 1969 off-broadway production of the play, which had rather flopped when first put on, but was a huge success.
RIP.

No age at all. Very sad to hear of her passing.
Francis Monkman, multi-instrumentalist, has died of cancer aged 73. Monkman leapt to fame as a member of Curved Air, although he departed after the band's third album 'Phantasmagoria' in 1972. He then moved into session work, working with the likes of Renaissance, Al Stewart, Lynsey de Paul and Kate Bush.
In 1974 Curved Air reformed in order to pay off a massive tax bill, but Monkman departed once more at the end of the tour. He then joined Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno in their 801 project, before joining Sky with classical guitarist John Williams.
During this period Monkman also composed several albums of library music for KPM and Bruton. In 1980 he composed the soundtrack for the movie 'The Long Good Friday', which was so successful he decided to leave Sky to concentrate on soundtrack work for film and TV.

Adrian Street, Welsh wrestler who called himself the sadist in sequins, and whose persona was apparently a big inspiration for Marc Bolan when he abandoned the pixie hippy schtick of Tyrannosaurus Rex to go glam rock in 1970.In the early 70s, Street wrestled a secret opponent who turned out to be Jimmy Saville. The toxic DJ appeared wearing garb which seemed to be imitating and mocking that of Street, who, once the bell rang, gave him a bloody good kicking, tearing out clumps of Saville's hair. If he'd known about the things Saville was getting up to I wonder whether he'd have 'fixed' Jim for good.

A sad farewell, from me at least, to Jimmy Buffett. I've been a big fan since the late 70s and have been lucky to see him in concert. To many he was a lightweight, but I found many of his lyrics insightful and his books a delight. I heartily recommend A Pirate Looks at Fifty. "Jimmy Buffett—yeah, the “Margaritaville” guy—is one of just a few authors to have books that topped both the fiction and non-fiction ‘New York Times’ bestsellers lists. Other authors that have that distinction include Hemingway and Steinbeck." In many respects he was a true renaissance man with widespread interests. I will miss him.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-0...
