Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, has passed away at the ridiculously young age of 50. Nothing conclusive yet, but preliminary reports suggest a heart attack caused by a drugs cocktail.

This is where I first encountered June Brown (she makes her appearance at 2:00 in) as Lady Eleanor. Somehow, she looked rather old even then (1973)

One of the legendary figures of rock 'n' roll, Art Rupe, has died aged 104. For the people saying 'who?', he was the founder of Specialty Records - one of many independent labels to appear in the wake of World War II. Specialty had amongst its roster the likes of Little Richard, Larry Williams, Lloyd Price (Lawdy Miss Clawdy), Percy Mayfield, Art Neville, and in his gospel days with the Soul Stirrers, Sam Cooke.https://www.theguardian.com/music/202...
German electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze has died aged 74. Beginning as drummer with Tangerine Dream, he recorded one album with them before jumping ship to Ash Ra Tempel for whom he also made one album, leaving to begin his long solo career which spanned some fifty albums (the last of which, Deus Arrakis, inspired by Dune, a longtime fascination for Schulze, will be released in June).He also worked as producer for Dead Can Dance singer Lisa Gerrard (the pair also doing several live albums together) and Alphaville.

Seems it's the time for drummers (better break a drumstick), as Ric Parnell shuffles off this mortal coil aged 70. The drummer with Atomic Rooster during their heyday (1970-74) he proceeded to play for several other bands before becoming a session player (Toni Basil's 'Mickey' is one he's on). Ric may be best remembered however for playing doomed drummer Mick Shrimpton in 'This Is Spinal Tap'

Enjoyed what i heard on Stomu Ymashta's "Go" album, way back, now somewhere on cassette tape. Only 1 album recorded with Tangerine Dream, who i do like, occasionally.
I was sorry to hear of Dennis Waterman's death. I was a fan of Minder back in the day but two films always stood out for me - Up The Junction with Suzy Kendall and A Captain's Tale - about the first World Cup tournament.
Poor Dennis. Just been watching him in New Tricks. Good actor. RIP.

I confess i was never a big fan and wouldn't call him a great actor but warmed to him in the early New Tricks because he didn't take himself too seriously and there was a kind of chemistry between him, Alun Armstrong and James Bolam (both much better actors IMO). I think some George Cole rubbed off on him - no bad thing. Famous for marriage to Rula Lenska of Rock Follies fame, also for writing and singing a few theme songs (very average).

Tragic news about death of Nick Cave's son Jethro (31). Cave lost another son, Arthur, in 2015 after he fell to death from a cliff in Brighton. He was 15-years-old. Jethro was born in Melbourne in 1991 and only learned that Cave was his father aged eight. Awful.
Evángelos Odysséas Papathanassíou, better known to the world as Vangelis, has died aged 79. Largely self taught, he joined his first band, Forminx, in 1963. After the end of the group he travelled to Paris and formed the legendary Aphrodite's Child with other Greek expats. The band only lasted a couple of albums before splitting up; Vangelis found the world of commercial popular music boring and much preferred composing soundtracks, which he had already begun doing before AC. A string of solo albums followed, some highly acclaimed, alongside his soundtrack work, which of course included legendary scores for Blade Runner and Chariots Of Fire amongst others.https://www.theguardian.com/music/202...

Can't believe that Ray Liotta is gone. He died in his sleep in the Dom Rep aged just 67. First saw him in Field Of Dreams (so handsome) and loved him in Goodfellas and Unlawful Entry, etc. RIP. xxx

Farewell Alan Blaikley who died on July 4 aged 82. I've recently been re-watching the Miss Marple TV series (Joan Hickson) for which he contributed the theme music together with his partner Ken Howard. The pair also wrote many hits for the likes of The Herd, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, The Honeycombs and Marmalade.
Farewell Judith Durham (The Seekers). What an amazing voice and career she had. I first saw The Seekers in 1967(??) in Salisbury (now Harare) when they toured in southern Africa. And I saw them reformed in 2013(??) and also saw a solo concert that Judith did in recent years. She had a unique voice and was also a very good songwriter. She was the tiniest thing, really the frame of a small 11 year old but she always seemed full of joy.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-08-0...

And another Australian icon has left us - Olivia Newton-John. It sounds a bit mean-spirited to say I was never a fan (although I do like Grease) but I appreciate all she has done to raise awareness of breast cancer and put her money there too.
And another. Legendary Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier died yesterday (8th). RIP.
I am a longstanding fan of Motown. I play his 2018 album Reimagination often. Might have to give it a spin today.

Another of my favourites! I think we have all the books, DVDs, CDs, soft toys, China ornaments. While The Snowman will always be my favourite, it's impossible to read/watch Ethel & Ernest without shedding a tear. He was a genius!

HM Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96. C.o.D not yet known.Seems extraordinary to me, that just 2 days ago, Her Majesty was able to appoint her 15th and final Prime minister. She did look frail, but clearly hid the truth of her health, right to the very end. And now, is it just me, or does the notion of a new King 'Charles' III seem surreal, given the history? I thought he was going to George VII. Clearly not.

I found it annoying that he received just a fine for his involvement in 'party gate'....as if that was punishment enough? It's not like he short of a few bob.....a man who now will go on the gravy train of well paid after dinner speeches, more novels, including possibly a second Winston Churchill biography, and no doubt..his own biography, along with plenty of other lucrative appointments. They've all done it....Theresa May earned herself 750K this year alone for 9 speeches....these politicians always ensure themselves a wealthy future. And now we have Liz Truss in the house.....the least desired of all the candidates from my perspective.....not that the others were much better, most if not all of them were awful.
Anyhoo, i fear we're detracting from the person of the moment.
At least Theresa May didn't drop the country in deep trouble and then immediately swan off to make money like Cameron did ...I can't fault the Queen for her devotion to duty. She was pretty much forced into the job but never appeared to falter. An example not many people would follow. She's earned some peace.

David Longdon, vocalist and flute player with English prog rock band Big Big Train, 55 died after an accidental fall at this home on Nov 20th 2021. Great singer, composer and musician - can unreservedly recommend BBT's English Electric albums, Underfall Yard and others - shades of Yes, Genesis, Tull but also distinctive sounds of their own, incorporating colliery brass band parts. Tragic loss.
In July 2021 Judy Dyble, founder member and vocalist of Fairport Convention, 70. Coincidence here is that her last album Between a Breath and a Breath was co-produced and released with David Longdon ! Lovely album.
