theDuke | 6502 comments Sad to have learned that former Top Gear presenter Sabine Schmitz, has died from cancer aged just 51.

Famously known as the The Queen of the Nürburgring, the German racing legend Schmitz, is the only woman to have won the 24 Hours Nürburgring to date, and in her own estimates, had been around the notorious circuit over 20,000 times, an average of 1200 per year!

Sabine is one of three sisters that began racing early on, but only Sabine continued and collected victories. After training in hotel and catering, she married and ran a hotel, later setting up her own bar business after her divorce in 2000. Schmitz first came to public attention after winning the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1996 and 1997, Schmitz then went on to win the CHC and VLN race events, the VLN endurance racing championship in 1998. She had also acquired her helicopter licence during this time.

She had a successful career as a professional racing driver for BMW and Porsche, Schmitz gained notoriety from driving one of two BMW M5 "ring taxis" around the 20.8 km (12.9 mile long race track in an 'entertaining' manner, earning her second nickname "The Fastest Taxi Driver In The World." Schmitz later formed her own company providing advanced driver training and a "ring taxi" service for passengers. She herself ceased driving the 'ring taxi' in 2011.

As a result of her rising popularity as the "Fastest Taxi Driver In The World" and her charismatic personality, Schmitz became an occasional motorsport guest commentator, known for her gleefully dry descriptions of driving incidents. In 2006, Schmitz went on to co-host a motoring show on German television, D Motor. She has also appeared on Fifth Gear.

Her first British TV appearance was in 2002, on Jeremy Clarkson: Meet The Neighbours show, where she took Clarkson around the Nürburgring in the "ring taxi". Schmitz gained further recognition after appearing on BBC's Top Gear motoring show in 2004, tutoring Clarkson to set a lap time in a diesel S Type Jaguar around the 'ring' of 9ms 59s. She castigated his best lap time with the comment "I tell you something, I do that lap time in a van!". A few years later, she tried to do just that...but failed. But she did beat Clarkson's lap time in the S Type Jaguar by a massive 47 seconds!!

She made several appearances on the Top Gear programme throughout the years, becoming one of the new presenters for the revamped motoring show from 2016, after Clarkson, May & Hammond left in 2015, following the BBC's decision not to renew Clarkson's contract after his infamous assault on a Top Gear producer incident, while filming on location.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2017, Schmitz continued to make appearances on the Top Gear show up to 2020, ceasing when her condition worsened. She died in hospital in her home city of Trier on 16th March, aged 51.

I got that from a piece in Radio Times (the issue covering this week). Think the article said it was a transit van, which makes it even more impressive.

the latest player to die from a condition related to dementia. an alarming number of others are also suffering, mostly, it is said, as a result of continuous heading of the ball. i reckon, in a few years, the header will be classed as handball (centre halfs will go out of business), because the game can't keep doing nothing! naysayers say that in those days the ball was a big heavy leather object, whereas modern ones are far lighter. maybe so but a 'stoat oan the heid' is still a stoat on the heid!

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Some sad losses that have stood out for me over the last month ...

Chris Barber OBE, the English Jazz Musician, best known as a Band-leader and Trombonist. died on the 2nd of March at the age of 90 - from complications relating to Dementia.

Nicola Pagett, a quite remarkable Actress of her time, died on the 3rd of March at the age of 75 - as the result of being diagnosed with a Brain Tumour.

Lou (Lodewijk Frederik) Ottens who died on the 6th of March at the age of 94 was a Dutch Engineer and Inventor - best known as the Inventor of the Cassette Tape and for his work in helping to create and develop the Compact Disc. He was employed by Philips for the entirety of his career and, after retiring, continued to remain active in the field of Technology for many years.

Trevor Peacock, the English Actor, Screenwriter, and Songwriter - who was probably best known to many for one of his last roles playing Jim Trott in 'The Vicar of Dibley' - died on the 8th of March. He was diagnosed as having Dementia in 2009, had retired from acting, and was living in a Nursing Home in Yeovil in Somerset. He was 89.

And ... George Segal, the dramatic and comedic American Actor and Musician, sadly died on the 23rd of March of complications as a result of having Bypass Surgery in Santa Rosa in California - at the age of 87.

Val H. | 22282 comments I loved George Segal and always thought he was under-utilised by Hollywood. I think he should have been offered more comedic roles, in the tradition of Cary Grant. Although dated, I still enjoy "A Touch of Class" with Glenda Jackson.

message 1016: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22282 comments The main thing I've always remembered from Fifteen is how Cleary transposed Carl Sandburg's line "The fog comes on little cat feet" to "I wish the cat came on little fog feet." It's stayed in my mind for nearly 60 years!

message 1017: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Awww, I really like that, Val ;o>

I also have got several Lines from various Books, Poems, and Songs that have stayed with me ever since I first heard them - and they tend to suddenly come into my Mind on a regular basis as well ;o>

message 1018: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22282 comments If I come across something that strikes a chord or just captures my imagination, I usually transcribe it into a Word file I call "Quotes", which is well over 100 pages. But the Cleary quote above was just embedded in my memory.

Val, your quote reminded me of a verse from the song "Pilgrims" (a particular favourite of mine) by Widespread Panic:

"Little black kitty crossed our path wearing little fog feet
And the crows they're just drifters through my window
The late night city's lights are growing sharper
And I hear another song, I see it pouring from the look in your eyes"

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments I have several embedded Lines that frequently spring to Mind and I have got a similar Laptop File, Val - plus I also have an old Shoe Box that is filled to the brim with saved pieces of paper with Poems & Quotes on.

Once every few years I like to have a good sort through the Shoe Box - thinking that I really ought to get rid of this now - but, in over 30 years, I've still never been able to bring myself to throw it or anything in it away! - LOL!!! ;o>

And you have both reminded me twice now of something by T.S. Eliot ...

"The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes,
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
Lingered upon the pools that stand in drains,
Let fall upon its back the soot that falls from chimneys,
Slipped by the terrace, made a sudden leap,
And seeing that it was a soft October night,
Curled once about the house, and fell asleep"

Nah, Anna was great. Rangers and Queen daft, and she called a spade a spade. I used to save the hair metal for dumb and dumber downstairs. Doors slamming, dog constantly barking and he thinks it's ok to hammer at 11.30pm. WTF is it with some people!!! I'm better behaved now though and use my headphones. 😇

It seems fog has been a fruitful source of inspiration to poets and lyricists over the years. I know it still occurs but clean fuel must mean it's not as common or dangerous as it once was??

There has been a massive House Interior fashion trend for having Log Burners over the last decade here in the UK, Val - and I read somewhere recently that there are going to have to be Laws about their use put in place because of the significant increase in Air Pollution that has unfortunately been caused by them.

message 1029: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22282 comments Log burners are popular here too but mainly in rural areas (possibly because of more readily available wood). When my dad retired in the 1990s, he moved to King Island, a dot in Bass Strait between Melbourne and Tasmania. Nearly everyone there (including him) had a log burner, which always amused me as the wind-swept island was already almost denuded of trees!

I agree; the BBC's blanket coverage has been ridiculous. Not just BBC 1 and 2, but also every single radio network today (we have the local station, plus Radios 2, 4 and 6 Music on the kitchen radio, and it was the same across all four).

BBC 4 didn't even bother broadcasting, just a banner advising viewers to tune into to the Philathon on 1 & 2. Crazy levels of obsequient reverence and pointless babbling. He was a dutiful, 'characterful' hubby to the monarch, had a long and pampered life on the taxpayers' generous bankroll, was obviously extremely frail on leaving the (obscenely expensive) private hospital recently and subsequently died a presumably peaceful death in the luxurious bosom of his family. RIP but really, enough already. Not a tragedy, not a mystery, it wasn't 9/11 or Diana but a very old cosseted and indulged man dying after an exceptionally long innings, shame he couldn't make the century and get the card from 'er indoors but dial it down a bit? Mind you, when you put him next to the offspring..........

Wonder if the NI Unionist loyalists will give the rioting a miss a mark of respect tonight?

I remember what it was like when Lady Diana was tragically killed in 1997.....practically every channel radio and TV, had nothing but news reports of her for the whole day. Music radio stations were mostly off air. I recall Radio 2, just broadcast the same sombre piece of music throughout the day....intersected only by the hourly news broadcasts, which of course were about her death.

And i believe the same thing happened when the Queen Mother passed away nearly 20 years ago.....it is nothing new.

Just think what will happen when our monarch crosses the veil....we'll probably get nothing but programmes about the Queen's life for a month!
