Left for dead, abandoned on an alien planet, astronaut Mark Watney must find a way to survive until NASA is able to send a rescue ship. All he needs to survive is air, water, food, and shelter. And a way to communicate with Earth to tell NASA he is still alive. Mark has a can-do attitude studded with healthy doses of black humor. He’s in a pickle and he knows it. He tackles each of his challenges one at a time. He has the time, actually too much time as his food supply will be exhausted long before a rescue ship can arrive. Andy Weir has created a memorable character in Mark Watney. I found myself cheering on his successes, cringing at the failures and laughing at his reactions to each. Gallows humor at its best.
I listened to the audiobook version of this and loved it. I found that, although it had a lot of science in it, I didn't need to follow or understand that to enjoy the story. However it added a layer of authenticity to his adventures. His determination and dark humour carried him through the problems and disasters and I was willing him on right to the end!
