This came out around mid to late 80's. The title of the book was something like M81 A Romance (although it's not exactly that, obviously). I recall the plot involved some sort of connection between someone on Earth with someone in that distant galaxy. The "feel" of the book was more literary fiction rather than straight up genre sci-fi.
